I was having severe cooling issues last fall after rebuilding my intake and installing new radiator hoses and thermostat. My intake is a belt driven supercharger, and I pulled everything apart again to inspect the cooling system, change the fan, etc. I just realized that I ran the belt wrong, and my water pump was spinning backwards. Yup, I’m an idiot...
last fall it got hot enough in 1 mile that it pissed most of the cool and out of the overflow and stumbled the last 8th mile to my driveway. No coolant in the oil though, and coolant system still pressure checks good.
I have you beat. Last month I put an new radiator in my Cheyanne pickup. I forgot to take the black caps off the radiator (most of the time they are bright yellow). I got about 2 miles down the road and the temp gauge shot strait up and pegged. I blew the **** out of the head gasket. So I slapped a new head gasket on there and the truck still ran hot; that's when I found the radiator plug in the lower hose. SMH.
Ok,true confessions lol. Late 1980s working as flat rate tech in Mazda dealership. Replacing longblock in 1983 626,warranty job, rushing. Engine will NOT run, doesn't even try to start. WTF! Cranks good, has spark, fuel. Plugs are dry...
Pull valve cover, check cam timing. Further diagnostics reveal recessed plastic shipping plugs in intake ports of cyl. head. I was SURE i'd removed them, only took 2 hrs to find i did not...can laugh about it now, kinda like the ventilated oil filter.

If you use paper towels to stop the rad from dripping while doing an engine swap on a '73 Satellite, remember to take the paper towels out before you hook up the hoses.
