former owner put on a universal rather small cat. it last two hard pulls on the car! lol....now you hear a nice loud rattling. GSLSE power....

but i wonder if it will still help in passing. i mean at least visually for sure, but i still need to get the car smogged...

Yeah you'll fail LOL. Mine's cooked too. I can hear it rattle when I do some "spirited driving" LOL. I failed so I'm sure you will too, but you never know

Yeh, about as bad as living in one of those states that legislates agains evolution. Hey, Alex, you started it, hope you can take the joke!

Do SEs blow out cats faster than 12As? What is the best aftermarket cat set up for 12As, I might be needed one myself someday.

Ray

We don't have inspections where I live either and I have to say it's nice. Still, a catalytic converter is an interesting concept. I'd like to get some advice on good aftermarket cat systems for the 12A, anybody happy with their's?

Ray

if the catalyic is rattling the it is most likely fried..and if you are runnin the car with it ..it could on the off chance clog up..and that will decrease your engine performance..you can do a number of things ..Replace the catalytic..(stock or Hi-flo..you choose)..Hollow the cat out..Or swap the cat out to either a "test pipe" or a Presilencer/resonator...As far as Emissions ..you will most likely fail the "sniffer..since the Ceramic Brick inside is toast...and is not absorbing the "bad stuff"from your Exhaust..of course it will pass the Visual..unless it's split apart and leaking exhaust from the cat..and take it from a guy that has already "did that and got the T-shirt"..my 2nd gen Did Not Pass Emissions with a Hollow Cat..

i just smogged my gsl-se. its a stock motor with no 6 ports, they were removed. acv was rigged up to blow all the air pump air into the exhaust ports. with a bad stock cat the numbers were in these ranges

hc's idle 1500ppm, 1500 rpms 200ppms the co was around 1%, this fails in ca, barely

new cat, idle was like 600ppms, over 1500rpm the hc's dropped to 6, yes 6. co was 0%

so to actually answer the question, the gsl-se is pretty close to passing with a bad/weak/non working cat

Fixed that for you.

Now, get a friggin' air pump on there and an ACV and get it tuned so that it's not misfiring half the time (cat killer) and get a new cat on it, the biggest one you can buy, and then you *will* pass.

Having a cat with no air pump is ASKING for a dead converter. Likewise, having any kind of misfire.

Note for other users: Most of Ohio's counties meet Federal clean air standards, and have no emissions testing. The ones that don't meet standards have emissions testing, and for cars older than 1996 they only do a 25/25 dyno sniffer test and they make sure your gas cap works. You could have a Mr. Fusion and they wouldn't care as long as it's clean on the rollers and the gas cap holds pressure.

I didn't know the "forced air" method also worked on fuelie cars. Heck, that'd be easier than locating a functional ACV, just get a spare blockoff plate, drill in the appropriate spot, tap for pipe thread, and stick a hose nipple in there, then stuff an air pump on there (again, if they'll fit - and they should, same water pump housing right? - I have scads of 12A pumps free for taking) and you'll pass. After you fix that pesky runs-obscenely-rich problem.
