Mazda pilot bearing remover?
Go to autozone and rent it, its free as long as you return it. I bought one and
just filed the ends a bit to make it work. Much cheaper than buying the mazda
version and works fine.

i rented on once. there's two tools you have to get, the bearing puller and the slide hammer. You're actually buying it when you rent it but you get that refunded when you return them. so yeah it's free to rent. but if you can't afford the initial cost to rent it you're pretty much screwed. can't remember the exact cost but it was well over $100.

A couple years back, I bought a cheap slide hammer from Harbor Freight that came with an attachment that fit the pilot bearing well enough. Overall, it was a complete hunk of poo, but it worked well for that job and was kinda passable for a couple other things that I've used it for.

It doesn't look like they've changed it: http://www.harborfreight.com/15-piec...-set-5469.html
If I recall, it was the two-jaw puller attachment that got the job done. It's shown in the top-middle of the photo.

You really don't need to replace the pilot bearing unless it is damaged. I've replaced at least a dozen clutches and only 2 pilot bearings needed to be replaced.

i always replace the pilot bearing and seal..but again, thats just me. i figure while its all apart, i might as well replace the pilot bearing and the seal. i bought a mazda pilot bearing puller and it works far better than the el-cheapo harbor freight unit. i believe that its WELL worth the $110i spent on it. i've used it more thimes than i can count. don't hesitate to buy one if you can afford it.

I believe that Atkins rotary is making or selling the PB puller and they also have a PB installer as well. I would not use the cheapo ones I went that route a couple of times on bad PBs and had bad experiences where I then needed to use die grinders. even the worst shape PBs I have been able to get out with the factory type Puller. Well worth the money.
You might be able to get a really good deal on the tools and the clutch kit if you call atkins direct, what with the economy and everything

Just rent the one from Autozone. I've used it a bunch of times, and it has always worked great. Best of all, its FREE. You pay a deposit to borrow it, and then you get all your money back when you return it.

Get a long carriage bolt, a large washer and a nut that fits the bolt. The head of the bolt should be slightly larger than the inside diameter of the pilot bearing. Grind the head of the bolt until it just fits through the pilot bearing. Get a socket that has a larger inside diameter than the outside diameter of the pilot bearing. Put the socket over the pilot bearing with the stem of the bolt sticking up through it. Put the washer and nut on the bolt and tighten the bolt while holding the head slightly off center. The head of the bolt will hook onto the pilot bearing and pull it out when you tighten the nut.
Then there's the toilet paper method....
