?????why.

Just go get some new plug wires/ and plugs. sorry but thats painfull to see.

In fact just get it all. when I bought my car the spark plugs where falling apart, cap and rotor were all busted up due to Miss alignment. and the leading and trailing spark was backwards, and it still ran. It also needed a new radiator, clutch fan, drive shaft, heater core, belts, omp rebuild, suspension. I can come up with more but I'm still working off that list. I still need a fan, heater core, Omp rebuild (I'm premixing now), and suspension. But runs good just got to avoid traffic like the plague. It be done by now but I found a RB header for 50 bucks, couldn't pass it up. and I got a 2g alt and coil.

i would recomend a good cleaning as well... that is unless you have a critter you are feeding lol. with the wires looking the way they do, it should be a safe bet the rest of the system is in the same disrepair.

cleaning??? LOL I pulled this thing out of a barn yesterday I put pictures in the photo section under 1985 RX-7 and they are after we washed it. 7 years of barn dust in this thing but hey I got it for 300.00 and should make a great summer project that I'm sure will still be a money pit of fun.

It's rougher than it looks on the pictures but should be fun project to restore right now none of the gauges work except the speedo check the connections on the gauge cluster's all the lights work hazards work but the turn signals do not work check all the fuses under the dash there all good. have a number of plugs under the hood not connected to anything and nothing in site to plug into. and then there the burnt harnnes with electrical tape trying to keep thing's shorting so Im going to need a new harness from the fire wall out also. First pic is driver side under the mastercyclinder second pic is the burt harness third pic is more empty plus driver side up by head light awaiting on manual to arrive to try and figure these out

Take that thing completely apart. Piece by piece. Restore every part with a new part or clean the part. Then reinstall it. That's what this car is going to take to get it nice again. Take your time. And remember... do it right, the rotary gods are watching you, and they are vengeful!

Download the FSM, link is provided. Identify which harness/harness's you need and post a WTB in the 1st parts section. Take lots of pics before tearing into it, makes reinstall much easier. While you're in there, remove as many parts as you can and treat the rust.

Since the carb will need a rebuild, removing that, the intake and whatever else is in the way will give you greater access rust mitigation.

Hey trochoid thanks a lot for the links man that is going to help out a lot. I cant complain too bad about the rust most seems to be surface rust there's a couple of spots on both doors that will need some filler but it is not rusted through the under side does not look bad either a few patches here and there. I have not done body work in 20 years, but my boy is working on getting his ASE degree and has a few friends in the business who what to help.

glad to see the car coming along. any other issues you are tackling? for the fuel gauge, i would look at the sender as the culprit. often times, the ground connection oxidizes on the outer body where the brass connection is rivited to teh sender body. pretty common. it can be re-grounded by cleaning and soldering but if you have the tank down its best to replace the sender. i have a nice tank dropping writeup with pics if you need it.

not sure if it is your guild or not but i found one on another post so I will be dropping the fuel tank this weekend. Plus even though i drained and flushed the tank I have clogged to fuel filters with only 2 gallons of gas added each time.

Just got my GSL-SE back after a "no-start" problem was fixed at local dealer...fuel pump was replaced. However, now the fuel gauge is wonky. (Never had a problem before.) Was reading near zero as I drove it away from the dealer so thought they'd lost most of the gas during the repair. Pumped in almost 20 litres and now it oscillates slowly between 1/4 and 5/8ths of a tank.

Given comments above by Mazdaverx713b, wanted to try his suggested clean-up of the sender's ground conn. But what care is needed with soldering iron, etc., to avoid fire/explosion from working near the tank?

BTW, thanks for the great info in that tank-dropping chronicle.

I saw a similar problem years ago, and it depends on the brand of pump, you see the aftermaket "AIRTEX" pump floats are on different sides of many OEM pumps and thus have to be turned different directions than the stock pumps, many mechanics miss it, and it messes up your fuel gauge becuase the float is likely hanging up on something.....

Never personally seen the issue on a 7, but I have on many other mazda's and fords throughout the years.
