Loud!
My newly acquired '85 has a straight pipe w/ muffler. Its LOUD. Any way to quieten it down without sacrificeing lots of $$ and performance? I want it to sound sporty, but not like the diesel it does now. Got a local mufffler shop, do I trust their advise?

some people have gutted a glasspack and refilled it with stainless steel with good success. You could also get a presilencer from racingbeat or elsewhere moroso muffler have an interesting concept. Ive never heard one though. I think they sell them at www.summitracing.com

I would say put a presilencer or something like Neanderthol says into the system.
Do not trust a muffler shop for advice unless they have a good deal of experience with rotaries. But an exhaust is an exhaust when it comes down to it for building or fixing it. Am I making any sense here???

It sounded almost a quiet as stock, deeper sound throughout, looked stock, and an improvement over stock.
It doesn't have that "weed-eater" noise either.

When I lived in NJ, a high flow Cat and a turbo muffler did the trick. NJ smog is tough.
Rotary engine exhaust is a lot hotter than piston engines. Do like these guys said, or go to someone who knows what to put on a rotary engine. Also, if you buy something that lets you pass emissions test, take it off and keep it in the garage or something until next year. Then you can run open headers out the wheel wells with flames coming out the pipes
