Just picked up an '83

12a, 5spd, white/grey. Not sure if it runs yet, needs a center section for the rear. Paid $300 for it at a police auction today, had to tow it home. But heres the best part: this car is solid, it has NO rust. Rare find in Nebraska, they use tons of road salt here.

I'll be building this one, and most likely selling the '85 SE.

Btw does anyone know what model it might be? The badge is removed.

VIN is JM1FB3311D0749695

For determining what model it is? I'll have pics of it soon, but didn't bother with it today. Figured you all know what an '83 RX-7 looks like.

That is where the more common answers can be found.

Why post a link to a stereo thread? I was asking which model I may have. If it can't be determined by the VIN, i'll get some pics.

easy questions for helping to determine trim grade. do you have rear disc brakes? yes, then you have a GSL. if not check for electric sideview mirrors. if you have them but have rear drum brakes then you have a GS. if the mirrors are manual mirrors, you have an S. an S will more than likely have a two spoke steering wheel as well.

It has rear drums and manual mirrors, so I guess it's an S model.

Thanks Mazdaverx713b, finally some help and not flames or sarcastic nonsense. I was starting to wonder about the maturity level of this forum...

Easy Mike. As a fellow Nebraskan we can't can't be dising our senior members. The VIN #s will not tell which model the car is. It all comes down to options, some of which were added by the dealer's themselves back in those days.

S model will not have a sunroof, electric mirrors or an electric hatch release. GSL models will have a rear wiper and lsd. GS model falls in between the 2.

How was that dissing? I really do wonder about maturity level when all I get is flames and sarcasm(or whatever it was). Maybe work on discouraging those types of unproductive replies from people?

I'm new to rotaries, and theres quite a bit I don't know about them, but i'm definitely not new to cars or mechanical work. I truly do appreciate it if anyone here is willing to offer advice and knowledge. But if someone doesn't want to help, why even respond?

My car has manual steering, manual windows, manual mirrors, rear drums, no electric hatch release. I'm thinking definitely an S model based on what you and mazdaverx713b have said, thanks for the help.

Because I wanted to give you some really "Sound" advice.

J/K
I keyed in one wrong number.

This is the correct link..

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/1st-gen-rx-7-faq-page-237777/

It's the link to the FAQ section and on the 1st page there you will find the question with the link that discusses the differences between all of the models.

Settle down there. There were no sarcastic remarks or flaming going on in the repsones to you at all.

Midwest 7's was making a general statement that is made to all new members. Meaning that it is a unwritten rule that all new members post pictures of there car. It's a Welcoming to the forum thing, not a sarcastic or flaming remark.

As far as my link. I took the time to give you a link to the FAQ section. A section that would of answered your question and also one that when you read the rules of the 1st gen section urges you to read along with other helpful tips to let you know where info can be found.

Unfortunatley I keyed in 1 wrong number and it took you to an unrelated thread.

And i'm sorry I misunderstood your intentions. I guess i've been around too many of those types the past few years.

Interesting, so the S doesn't have power mirrors or hatch? My car does so perhaps its a GS, but it doesn't have a sunroof so I thought it was an S. BTW one of the links in the FAQ about the model designations is no longer valid. The other link works but that site does not tell what options differentiate the trim levels.

not having a sunroof does not always mean S model. the sunroofs were optional on the GS. the give aways for an S are no dead pedal, no sunshade on the winshield, no power mirrors or hatch release, no illuminated ignition cylinder, no map light no glove box light, and a two spoke steering wheel.

All of the above of course goes out the window if I got ahold of it.

When I used to buy and sell them I would take the S model and add every option there was to them. It really confuses them when they go to buy rear brakes and get brake shoes then discover that there are rotors back there.

thats excellent doc!! i had an 81 GS that had rear disc brakes. someone somewhere in its life converted it to rear discs and painted it a gloss black over top of its original misty blue. i found the original paint when i pulled off a scuff plate. to be honest i liked the original color better. i ended up selling the car for $75 minus engine and trans. i wish i hadn't sold the car though. i really could have used that rear end!!!!
