Interior Lights Issues

Hey All,

With the COVID-19 sweeping the globe, I find myself with an excess of time to chase stupid problems I've never bothered with. My current one I am struggling to troubleshoot is a variety of interior lights that don't work and from the other threads and wiring diagram is I cannot see a common problem.

What does NOT work:
  • Gauge lights
  • Dome light
  • Map light
  • Cargo area light
What DOES work
  • Heater control lights (except for the AC side - but that's a bulb issue)
  • Clock light
  • license plate light
  • all headlight/corners/markers/signals/motors/tail lights
  • glove box light
The "non working" lights are not all on the dimmer switch are they? I can't see the dimmer switch on the wiring diagram (15-7) and my fuses and fusible links all seem intact.

What am I missing? I've tried to replace the bulbs with known working ones and checked with a multi meter across the terminals and nothing.

Thoughts? It must be something simple...

I have an SA, so no Map or Cargo light. The gauge lights are on the dimmer, so make sure its working or by pass it and see what happens. Dome light is turned off by the door and hatch buttons and the setting of the Dome light itself. My Dome light has door/off/on. If its on off it will never come on. With door, any open door or hatch will light it up. And on just turns it on all the time and I mean all the time.

I'll try testing the dimmer but yea - no power to these bulbs at all even in "on" for the map light, dome light and cargo light. Can't test gauge lights easily. I wouldnt think the dimmer switch would be connected to the map and dome lights but I've been wrong about other things..

Cluster dimmer not connected to other lights

Run some diagnostics on each of your door switches turning on/off the interior lights (I recently had to replace one of my door switches)

The rear hatch "latch" also has a wire running to it for the dome light. See if that wire is possibly disconnected.

And I'm sure you've checked your fuse box under the dash....

Ok Update - loose wire on the cargo light.

Map light (the one that rotates left and right) was burnt out - have to remove the whole mirror assembly.

Dome light - just straight up doesnt work even on "on" - still troubleshooting this one.

Dash lights I'll test the dimmer and if not, remove the gauges on the assumption the bulbs are burnt out.

For the dome light, check the ground or run to a good ground for testing.

I always forget to test the dumbest stuff. Bang on - map and dome light were a dirty ground (grounds through the screw to roof thing. Cleaned off the grounding rocker, tightened the grounding screw and re-installed and boom. Map and dome lights functional w/door functionality.

Not onto testing the dimmer switch - looks like it'll be a bastard to get at the connector.
