intercooler for 1st gen tii conversion

Hi there

would you guys recommend using the standard top mounted intercooler from tii and front mount it when doing the turbo conversion into a first gen ?

Or from which car would you recommend using an intercooler for front mount ?

thanks

c

You can also try one from a 20B. I just sold one for $65. They're pretty thick IC's.

NTR from an Isuzu truck. Do you have any of these trucks in south Africa?

I sold this one for $120

Or You can also weld two Turbo2 Ic's together. (sorry no pics)

I've got a pic of two TII ic's welded together, because that's what I'm using on my car. It works great.

ok, so i guess what you guys are saying is that the stock turbo ii in front mount position is inadequate. I'll be making a trip to the scrap yard then to look for some isuzu intercoolers.

I like the intercoolers on ebay. I saw one that was 24x12x3. The end tanks will fit in between the radiator brackets just in front of the radiator. Also the outlets point straight out through the radiator brakets. This makes the total intercoller piping length around 3 ft. Too long of piping will lead to severe turbo lag.

My opinion,if your gonna do the hard part of a FMIC(the piping) you might as well install a decent IC(the easy part)
While it is cooler up front than above the engine, the stock top mount just doesnt have much mass or surface area.On a warm day or with repeated runs, itll heatsoak and not be able to shed BTUs fast enough.
Intercoolers from the aftermarket are getting cheaper everyday and there are dozens of factory or used ICs that are better than the FC's,for the budget minded.

Mine was 400 bucks from Boostcoolers. Not bad for a brandnew Spearco with cast ends and a butt-load of mass.....

I am cureently turbo charging my n/a fc and asked myself the same question. If your looking for cheap id say get a volvo or saab ic from a junkyard. make sure you get metal endtanks(some volvo were plastic) I am using an ic off a saab 9000, i got it on ebay for 60 shipped.

Talking

I put this monster 32"x12"x3" intercooler in my TII 1st gen. I bought on ebay for $140 shipped from Australia. Very nice. I had to bend the radiator mouts and hack a huge 4" hole in them for clearance. Total piping and intercooler length of 6.5 feet, thats way better than the 9 feet length of my old setup. Of course I did have to make my own 3" intercooler piping and throttle body inlet flange. I powder coated them and it looks f#@cking awesome too, not to mention more functional.

i hope that radiator's not bolted up yet cos its an awefully long way fron any kind of airflow.

how do you find your cooling system? does it overheat alot cos that cooler is a sh*tload bigger than the rad.

personally if i was gonna run a cooler that big i'd fad up a v-mount system so i still got airflow to the radiator.

and it still looks like alot of piping. i'll measure mine tonight (it's 9am over here) and see how long that it

I did a write-up on a ebay IC. Do a search, you will find it.
