installing CD player

Does anybody have any information on installing a CD player or a step by step guide or wiring diagram. I have an 81 GSL, and I'am looking for any information that would help me understand the process better. as always Thanks in advance.

look around for a wiring diagram so you can identify +12, gnd, and ign. you'll also need to cut the bezel to fit a standard DIN headunit...

My best avice is to use a volt meter to determin the wires you need.

Generaly speaking you will need a

+12VDC Non Switched
+12VDC Switched (by the ignition)
0 VDC (ie. Ground Wire)

All of these wires sould be readaly available from the connector you removed from the OE radio

The easyset way IMHO to wire the speakers is to just run new wire. Leave the old stuff in place and jsut run new.

If you have the power antena you will need to consault a wireing diagram because the OE power antena uses an odd wireing, and switching system to raise and lower the antna mast by switching the polarity of the motor.

A bit of advice try to avoid cutting off any old connectors, just strip back some the insolation and splice your wires in there and then rap them tight with electrical tape

I hope this helps

Good luck

You don't even need to run new wires all the way. The stock speaker wires all meet in the rear bins. You could run wires up to them.

Or, if you use an amp, just run mount the amp in the rear bin, and and then use the stock speaker wires.

What anthrax said about the antenna having odd wiring, according to this wiring diagram it only uses the one wire to engage it, and then of course the ground. Correct me if i am wrong. I currently don't have mine hooked up, but i don't wanna take out that rear panel to expose the antenna. Too lazy.

instead of cutting open/slicing back the original wires to wire in the new cd player, it would probably be better to just use male terminals and slide them into the original connecters (oh, unless you need to use female terminals, i can't remember). its a lot cleaner that way, and it is much easier to take out if you ever install another cd player. besides, tape wears out and comes loose over time. i never use tape to connect anything important like my music.

The Rx-7 uses a negative trigger ant instead of a positive one like most cars... You will need a 4 or 5 point Bosche relay or similar. About $1.00 at your local car stereo shop or radio shack...

anyways, blue white or whatever power ant/remote on is on your radio goes to 86 on the relay, 85 and 87 go to chassis ground, 30 goes to the power ant wire on the car's harness. If you havent a clue what wire it is, buy a aftermarket mazda harness... I beleive the harness wont list a 81 rx-7, but its the same harness they used up to the mid 90's. Its a 4 part harness set, it will have 2 4 pin (front/white and rear/blue speakers), a 3 pin white harness (illum/dim, 12v ign and pwr ant), and a single pin 12V plug... The speaker harness will work for the rear amp or in this case under the passenger seat amp harness in some models. Ok that will be $15

Oh and 13 years of professional car stereo experience says this is a bad idea. Stripping back wires and just wrapping wire to it and taping it is a bad plan. #1 you are still cutting the harness although it doesnt really matter, the damn thing aint under warranty anyways, #2 it will come loose, tape heats up, and looses its stickness, and you end up with a gooey rigged up mess... Use male spade connectors if you are too cheap for a harness, but anyways, the harness is like $7 at auto zone...
