Ignition needing a upgrade?

Heyya

The engine atidle kinda stumbled, it doesn't startup that easy sometimes either.

I've read alot of topics on dlidfis and such but it's kinda hard to choose the lowest cost/work one to do, any guide thats good to fallow? I can do ebay and such for the parts, I don't wanna buy new at the store unless it'll cost less then 100ish... thx

Go with the 2GDFIS. You use the 2nd gen leading coil firing the leading plugs at the same time. Works really well and gives you that wasted spark as well. Its much easier to setup the DLIDFIS and works just as well IMHO.

I finally got around to installing 2GCDFIS in a couple of 1st gens the other day. It does appear to work a bit better than bone stock. However under the timing light, it appears the spark isn't strong enough to trigger my timing light's flash circuit when the particular plug I'm checking is in its waste spark mode.

In other words, when the clamp is on L1, I'm only seeing the marked side of the pulley (it behaves just like stock FB ignition). When clamped on the L2 plug wire, I'm only seeing the other side of the pulley (again behaves just like the old stock ignition).

Then when I clamp it on the trailing coil wire (this runs from the coil to the dizzy cap, not from cap to plugs), my timing light is able to show both sides of the pulley. The same holds true for DLIDFIS, actually.

Seems to me that with 2GCDFIS, most of the spark energy goes to the chamber that needs it the most, and less is availalbe to spark into the ionised or wasted spark chamber. However with DLIDFIS, there is no disparity. It sends full power to both leading spark plugs regardless of whether it's at TDC or in wasted spark/ionised/BDC/late leading position. I think wackyracer has seen this difference between the two systems as well.

What does this mean for you? Probably nothing. There are a few 1st gens and several FCs making 400+ hp on the stock FC leading coil, though usually the stock ignitor is replaced with a stonger ignition box like Crane or MSD. It's just an interesting observation that DLIDFIS actually provides more spark energy during the rotor chamber's down time helping to clean up emissions and make starting and idling easier. As to which system makes more power? I don't know. The difference is probably smaller than the margin of error of most dynos. You really don't need to worry about hopping up your ignition system until you're really boosting it or running exotic fuels anyway, so you can go with 2GCDFIS and be just as happy as with DLIDFIS, but if you have the time, parts, skills and inclination (oh and engine bay room), I'd go with DLIDFIS for that little extra.

I have seen this too. Since the FC coil is really one coil with 2 outputs, the majority of the spark goes to the plug that needs the 'bang'. So, 'L2' will just show the bottom of the pulley if you put a light on it.

If you have a leading coil around from your 2nd gen days, toss it on. Free upgrade and really simple to do. Either one is going to give you about the same results. It just depends on what parts you have around to determine what version is better for you. Now if you only have a 2nd gen trailing coil, you can use that for DLIDFIS. You will still need a pair of ignitors (like the 1st gen ones) and you would not use the ignitor in the 2nd gen pack. It would save you from buying a coil and they are already packaged in a pair with a mounting bracket. Just depends on what is easiest.

I don't have any coil packs, I'm planning on a blow through turbo setup in a month or two :3

I've had that problem with the timing light, it doesn't like the 2GDFI for some reason but not a problem, I just set it with the stock ignition hooked up then switch over to the 2GDFI, there's enough weak spark on the light to confirm it is still correct.

Here's what my 2GDFI looks like:

And speaking of rotary porches, here's one that showed up at the Mazmart Atlanta event this January, they look pretty cool

if you're looking for a quick comparison, i've always heard the DLIDFIS is better, but is also more expensive. so the cheapest and almost as good of an upgrade would be the 2gcdfis, i currently have that on my car and it works great.

what about coils that fit in the stock location.. per our spec rules we have to retain the stock location for the coils but I would like something stronger.
