I need quick answers!!!!
alrighty then...
i took my car up to my uncle's garage last night to replace my starter that went sour the day before.
the problem with the starter that went bad was that the little gear would pop out momentarily and then pop back down without the starter trying to turn it! it would just go click, click, click. so i said, okeday, lets get a new starter. got a new starter, put it in and it the same exact thing!!! damn!!! i'm hoping that it is just the starter, because it gets the whole 12 volts that it needs continuously when i try and start it. it's not the battery, or the alternator (brand new) but i'm just worried shitless that it is more electrical problems! can someone help quick!! i need to get it running for the weekend!
Josh
thanks guys

Sounds like your solenoid isn’t getting all the juice it should. It’s what pushes out the gear to engage the flywheel. Does the start motor turn even with the solenoid pushing the gear up?
Double check the ground leads between your engine an chassis, as well as the ground to the starter itself.

it's ok
the gear actually gets pushed out, but the motor never starts to turn it. it's getting all the power it needs (if 12 volts is correct)!
i just hope it's the starter!
Josh
thanks

First things first...
When you had the stater out of the car. Did you test it?
I usually use battery jumper cables.
Hook the ground up to the casing of the stater and put the positive on the one were the battery cable connects to it.
Now get yourself a long screwdriver and touch one end of the screwdirver to the positive jumper lead and the shank of the screwdriver to the little male electrical connector. The stater should shoot forward and spin.
If it doesn't then it's you starter. If it does, you need to change the battery cables (not too hard of a job), assuming that you have a new alternater and battery of course.
just did this procedure 2 weeks ago, when I bought a new starter, and then it didn't work.
Plus this is a good way to test your battery cables as well.
PS - Changing the battery cables is also a good reliability mod.

yeah, i tested it
i tested it, but not that way.
we just took it off of the mount, hooked up the wires and watched it pop in and out.
i guess it could be the cables, but i'll test it that way also!
thanks
Josh
anyone else with similar experience?
thanks

okay
also, about 2 months ago, i tried to start the car and it went "whhiiiiirrrr". the start started turning, but the solenoid never popped it out. that happened about 3 more times within the past 2 months up until now. just thought i'd add that into the equation.
thanks

When the starter gets juice two things happen
1. the solinoid kicks the starter gear up.
2. the starter motor spins
Which of these is yours not doing?

no spinnage
the solenoid pushes the gear out, but the motor never spins.
but, the solenoid just pops it out and then it falls back down.
so, what's happening is that the gear isn't staying in place long enough to kick the motor off! (i think) hehehe. so i dunno! but that's the order of events: the gear pops out (then back down) but the motor never starts up. the gear should stay up as long as i have the ignition turned to he start position.
