I just can't figure this out. Please help!

I posted a couple days ago about my situation. I just put a carb I got from someone on here and I can't get it to start or idle. My car is an 85 GSL with stripped Nikki carb. I played with it tonight and tightened idle screw in and got it to fire up and even had it idling at 850. Now, it just started all over again with no start unless primed, but will idle now down to appx 1100. I have checked vac lines and plugged them all and don't hear any leaks. I also checked with brake fluid. The carb will hiss when I cut it off and it sounds like a vac leak, but is coming from inside carb. Is this a carb problem???? I did notice it is heating up fast towards hot when it's idling, but runs right temp when driving.

That last sentence was a good clue. Sounds like the idle circuit is very lean.

Thanks. Guess I will go in until it stops and back off a turn and a half to start over?

I wouldn't go all the way in till it stops, turn it in until it the motor starts shaking then back out slowly until it is running smooth then I normally go out an extra half a turn.

From: here, where ever that is.
Just putting it out there, are you sure you got all the vacuum lines? there are a couple that are kinda hidden and one has surprised me all three times I've stripped a nikki. The one off the back of the carb. Below the EGR or whatever that pipe is called going to the cat. Of course, a hole that big would be obvious. Did you rebuild the carb when you stripped it? OR did it come to you stripped and you hoped for the best?

You could still be running lean, even if its not being caused by the idle circuit. As mentioned, check everything for vacuum leaks. Has this carb been converted to mechanical secondaries? If so, was the vacuum box for the secondaries kept in place or blocked off properly?
