I hate walking

Ok, heres the deal. Today my 84 gsl decide to quit and make me walk about 4 miles back home. Fortunatly I have a trailer and when back to get it. SO WHAT HAPPENED? I pulled out of a parking lot, hit the throttle and it started to die. I made it to the next lot before it quit, almost a block away. Here's what I know..... the fuel pump is not working. I was about to remove it but decided to run a wire from the battery to it to be sure the pump was bad. The pump works fine off the battery but does not work from its power source.(while cranking the car) I checked the fuses and are ok. THE ODD THING IS... at the time the car was quitting my tach dropped out and now doesn't work either. Is this a coincidence or are the 2 problems connected. WHERE DOES THE FUEL PUMP RECIEVE THE 'SIGNAL' TO COME ON? Any ideas would be appreciated? Thanks

I have a spare ignitor off my 82 GSL, don't know if it works but you can have it if you want it, just pay shipping.

This will enable him to start the car ad drive it just without the tach until he can get a different trailing ignitor.

i had this EXACT same problem happen to me on my 84. me and a buddie were riding down the road. my tach had been acting shady for a few days, but at that time i wasnt aware of the cause. well anyways, we are cruising and then all of a sudden my car stops working and we roll to a stop in a parking lot. i wasnt sure what it was. i tried gas, nothing. well i got it back to a shop and during that time i did some research and found out my ignitor and fuel pump relay went out at the same time. i jumped the relay and installed a spare ignitor i had and she was good as new. so, everyone above is correct. theres a thread about the relay. ill find it and post a link.

You can run it off just one ignitor if you follow gsl-se addict's instructions found here:

Stupid '84-'85 fuel pump relay... It caused more problems than it solved in my opinion.

I got a long tow home once because of this. I figured out I could get the car running again simply by jumping the fuel pump to a 4 foot hot wire running from for the rear hatch light through the storage compartments to the fuel pump wire. Now this wire is part of my on board repair kit and it has been used a few more times when I've had rear ignitor problems.

Thanks for all the help, problem solved. Trochoid was exactly right, all I had to do was replace the trailing ignitor and all is well. Thanks again, It would have taken me a long time before I would have looked there.
