Smacks Forehead.....

I havent posted in awhile and I decided after a recent event that I should let you guys know about it.... You might find it as humorus as I did...

I am looking for a new DD, something that will hold onto some resale value, is somewhat cheap, fun, and worth fixing/modifying. I have settled on the old N/A Porsche 944, would go turbo, but I want a commuter.
I drove by a dealership in my 7 and noticed what looked like a pristine white 944, and so I turned around to go see it. Well its first strike was the brown/tan interior, but I could get over that. I popped the hood and it recieved its second strike, the engine compartment was burgandy. on closer inspection the paint was chipping around the rubber bumper edges, and there was overspray on the turnsignals.

The Dealer makes his way towards me and tells me my car was smoking when I revved it before I turned it off, I dont quite remember how he put it, but it was more or less, I guess I see why you are looking for a new car. I didnt feel like explaining rotaries and there oil consumption, and the fact my OMP is stuck wide open... something I need to fix soon...

I have the parts, I just havent gotten to it yet... So anyway, I tell him it just does that and I dont mind it, so he gets my license and gets me the keys. I start it and it fires right up, sounds gorgeus, and I rev it once and something in the rearview mirror catches my eye, a HUMONGOUS ploom of bluish white smoke. I look at him smile and ask if it uses any oil, he says not really and seriously says, it just does that....

Oh and it was $3995....

Sorry if I just wasted five minutes of your day... but I cant believe what kind of garbage people can sell these days.

If you are after a 944, go with the 85 1/2 on up. The earlier ones had problems with their oil coolers failing and some other small problems. They also changed dashes and had some other refinements. On your story, talk about sticking his foot in his mouth about oil consumption.

Personally, the 944s and 928s, to me, are more of a VW than a Porsche. With the smoking, I'd run away fast.

Haha, I never trust people at dealerships anymore. The first time I went to one when I was old enough to be a target for salesmen, I was looking at the Rx-8 when it first came out. I had already read up on it but I decided to quiz the guy a little. I asked him if it had a mechanical or an electronically controlled differential. And the guy tried telling me, "Well, all differentials are a mixture of both really." lol.

The 928's are somthing that Porsche wishes it never made. It's an interesting design with an aluminum body. The 928S model is very quick and has some interesting cam designs with the 2 DOHC design per bank with hydraulic tensioners on each bank to keep thr chains tight. You do night want to blow a head gasket on one, book says 28 hours to do one side, don't remember which one but you have to pull the motor, ouch. The 944's are a pretty good handling car
and the later ones make some decent power bands.

Of course, the true Porsche is the old school 911.

28 hours, lol. that's almost enough time to pull, rebuild and install a 12A, and I can guess which one is probably cheaper.

I had a friend that bought both the 944 and 928 with his settlement. They do handle well, but I agree, a Porsche is a 911, whichever iteration it is.

To bad my pockets arent that deep.... I think I'd like the Carrera GT..... But on a more serious note for the right price I could consider a Boxster, being mid-engine and all... But I am still looking...

Although completely different in every way from the 911, the 928 is in no way a Volkswagen. You might be confused with the 924. (924 and 944 are more comparable to the RX-7) The 928 is a true Supercar, once the world's fastest production car, having a water-cooled front-mounted V8 engine. The 928 was attributed best sports car value over $20,000 in the same instance as the Mazda RX-7 was best sports car value under $20,000.

The Boxter is disappointing for many enthusiast, and I would advise to get a 911 instead. It is more a sports car in like spirit as the RX-7. The Cayman is advisable alternative for those who do not embrace the rear-engine Porsche.

By who's account? The Boxster (notice the spelling) is one of the best handling cars Porsche has ever built.

Yeah, the one with the 6 instead of the 4 cylinder. Those things scream because they're so small. A Fiat X1/9 is similiar but doesn't have the power and you can't get the parts in the states

The only Porsche I'd buy is a 911. The only true Porsche in my mind. I almost bought a 944 when I was searching for an rx7 because I couldn't find one, and the 944's were plentiful, but after having friends go through problems with their 944's and eventually selling them, I am glad I held out for an rx7 (even if it was automatic).

If you are happy with your car, then do not be concerned with others accounts.

944 non turbos handle great but they are pretty heavy and don't make a lot of power, plus they don't survive very well when used a lot.

you would do better with a 2.0L 4 cylinder than a 6 due to parts cost, weight, and handling.

It really doesn't have anything to do with my car. I'm interested to know where you're getting your information.

As far as I've seen, the car magazines have raved about it, Road and Track even voting it the second best all around sports car in 05, over the 911. There is a very active Boxster club and Boxster nation wide meet every year (Boxstoberfest), and Porsche themselves have to hamper the car's power in order to keep it behind the more expensive Carrera performace wise.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....&page_number=9

So I'm just asking where your information comes from.

had a 6 year old 914, just getting parts from the porsche dealer was a hassle

And when the dealer serviced it, well they treated me like an idiot for not getting a pony car.

914 handled great though, but it was under powered
