i got hit in the same spot by some crackhead last year, it was very minor, but still cost him $750 to repair. So you might wanna look into getting a good body and going form there.

Start motions to sue him, and tell him you'll settle out of court for $5,000 or so (enough to get you a new rex & cover the cost of swapping over mods - hammering out quarter panels without slathering them in Bondo is big bucks)

Make sure you have Uninsured motorist insurance, driving without insurance is a big no no in Cali so slap him for it
All that work going into fixing your car to bring it back into 'normal' condition is gunna run you some buck$.
There's a 1st gen that someone is selling in the L.A. area, he wants $500 for it or he will end up donating it. PM me and I will try to get more info for you

Yeah, the achille's heel of the unibody theory is the Rosanne's *** Sized Dent.

I saw a beat GSL-SE a couple weeks ago with the entire right rear corner of the car rebuilt with bondo. It was literally enough bondo to sculpt with a shovel. You don't want to do that.

Take it as a sign that you should begin collecting lots of parts cars because you need spare bodies. Don't let those crazy family members and landlords tell you anything different.

Trust me, replacing the unibody is fun and leads to 10,000 great excuses to buy lots of tools and in the process upgrade little things like the entire suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc.

If he has homeowners insurance, you can collect from that. It varies from state to state, but when my younger brother was hit by an unlicensed 15 year-old, and hospitalized with 2 broken legs, he sued the parents and their homeowners' insurance "took the hit".

Best of luck to you.

The fact that he doesn't have insurance should clue you to what you'd actually collect if you sued and won: nada, zip, zilch. UNLESS, he doesn't have insurance because he's a kid and not supposed to be driving anyway. Then you have the parents to fall back on.

You probably have "non-insured motorist" coverage with your insurance (YOU are insured aren't you?) and that will cover much of the damage. The problem with that is it won't cover your deductible.

Problem is, our cars are so old that max coverage on them amounts to **** or less (~$2500 for a mint condition 84 GSL-SE!) and the cost for bodyshop repairs is so high that you'll never win.

Of course, if you're a "widebody" fan - now's the time to contemplate it...

Actually, the owner of the vehicle is responsible financially, not the driver. I know this for a fact. I hit a water main in my red 84 7 and it was still in my grandfather's name. All the bills and everything including proof of insurance was put on my grandfather. They didn't care if I had insurance, just that he did on the car. As a matter of fact, I couldn't find the insurance slip that night, so they sent a letter to my grandfather that they were going to pull his liscence, not mine.

Anyways, the guy who owns the car can't claim it was stolen after the fact. Wait a week and then report it. As for the illegal, you have a good chance of getting paid, but make it reasonable. Most illegals live together in large families, they pull money and labor. I bet he has someone in his immediate family whop owns a repair shop.

In CA, uninsured motorist isn't automatic. It's additional to PLPD.

I know your pain though. I had some jackass in a huge SUV back into my car a few weeks ago. The damage isn't bad considering he flew like a bat out of hell in reverse and hit my car so hard it stopped his car dead thowing him back. It still pisses me off cause I just handed sanded and the car to metal and had it painted a year ago. Can't have anything nice today. The damage is 680 bucks. He has one more week to pay before I go to his insurance.

So here's what I would do. Give the guy the estimate and give him a time frame to pay that's reasonable. If you are going to sue him or want to make it official, you'll need to give him 30 days from the date he recieves the official request for money. There is a special form letter you need to follow, so use it. You need to have him served by a Sheriff or friend. YOU CANNOT SERVE HIM. The judge will dismiss the case.

If he doesn't pay within that time, then you can file a claim and have him served with his notice to appear in court.

I have sued many people in my business (computer repair) and been sued (never lost ). You must do it this way. Do not accept a payment agreement unless you get a large first payment (enough to make you happy if you recieve no more money). And do not accept a post dated check. If you do either of these two, you loose quite a few of your rights, including the ability to pursue as a criminal matter. You can only pursue civil. Then if you win civil and the guy shows up, he can request 20 bucks a month payments and the judge will give it to him. IF you win and he doesn't show up he has 30 days to appeal or pay. He can indefinitely appeal and keep you in court. If he doesn't pay or appeal you can garnish his wages, up to 25% net (not gross)

The problem with replacing the body is that the history comes with it. Most 500 body cars weren't regiustered as non op correctly. You'll have to pay all those lat epenalties and fines. You can however (illegally) change the vin numbers and all serial numbers.

Good luck

Same here, on number 3 myself. I think you'll find RX-7 owners probably have a better repeat purchase than any other owners. When my 1st one was crushed, I test drove some 2nd gens, some Camero's and various other cars. None had the right combo. My grandfather wrecked the 7 I bought for him (was rearended not his fault but totalled the Honda though he still drove home). He cried when I replaced it with an economy car because he's 83 years old and can't get in and out and I worry. He still bitches to this day about it.

For some reason when I day dream about other cars, it's about other 1st gens. Brand new cars don't impress me one bit. All plastic, look like crap in 10 years.
