how to remove power steering?

i want to remove ths power steering off of my DD 85 GSL. the reason being that the pump is about gone and its leaking fluid like crazy and making my engine bay all gross. i dont care about either reduction and all that. ill probably redo the system one day, but as of now its too expensive.

can i just take the belt off and not have to worry about it leaking? i read about looping some line but i never saw any pictures or read any good descriptions.

any input is greatly appreciated. thanks.

did you use an existing line or buy a new one? if you bought one, what size it is? did you fill it with fluid before doing this? is it leaking?

nick--thanks

I took the line that went from the pump and cut the hard peice of. then after removing all the cooler lines and stuff linked the only remaining 2 openings with a fuel line. It is a pita to remove all the cooler lines, I got my dremel and just started hacking away at the p/s cooler lines so I could rip them out.

I will post pictures this weekend with it all clean. naturally when I took the p/s off I got oil everywhere and never cleaned it up. You will need to clean that area after you do the work.

Before you start removing. Are you sure it's not just the pressure hose. 90% of the time its the hose and not the pump. The hose is not much money thru VB/BD.

It the shaft is not wobbling the pump is making grinding noises because it is low on fluid.
The are pretty tough pumps. On my last Se the pump had been leaking and the belt had been removed. The po left it that way and never bypassed the hose or anything.

One day after I had the car awhile I put some fluid in it and started it up. The pump still worked perfectly.

Loop the inlet and outlet fittings with a rubber hose on top of the steering box. Much cleaner.

I think I'm missing something here, why do we need to do this looping stuff? Can't you just remove the belt and drive it like that? I hope so because this is what I've been doing for the last year and 25,000 miles, but please let me know if I'm messing something up!

Your method is fine. but whats the point in removing it, if you dont get the simplicity and weight benefit.

That would probably be a good idea but like AWS I was just having a problem with noise, not leaking, and was putting off fixing it until I get some time. But you get used to driving without the PS and rebuilding the pump has become a low priority. Also, when I looked at it with the idea of taking it out, it looked like there was quite a bit involved, so I didn't bother. Maybe I'll have another look this weekend.

Thanks for the feedback, someone else told me it was a bad idea to run without the belt but I couldn't get him to explain why.

i removed my belt today. i went on a 100+ mile trip to sign up for college and all. it does make turning while at slow speeds more difficult, but makes driving "spirited" seem better to me. i like it and i plan to keep the belt off for now.

Yeh I got used to the no belt action real quick. So I guess we may as well take out the PS stuff, right? Anybody know how to do that?

ray-- look at wacys pics. i think all you have to do is make sure theres fluid in it and then route the lines back into itself. then just start removing the system. i doubt il remove mine. i dont see a reason to at this moment. im not worried about shedding the small amount of weight and its not in my weigh at the moment.
