How fast

Ok, guys, I ran a 3rd gen tonite, ran right with him to about 80 when I chickened out (hey, it was a 45 zone) (and I'm old). How fast are these cars? I doubt he had anything extraordinary, 'cause he never slipped a tire. I know I shoulda smoked him, but with a VERY tired 160K engine and the AC on, that was all she had. Gotta build another engine...

If you're saying you ran against a third gen, with your "Tired" 1st Gen - & With the A/C on, - and that you kept up till 80mph..

Then I have to call it.

Yeah, I smoked a Shelby mustang in my beat up 83 once. She couldn't find second gear. That is about the only way to beat anything in your stock 1st gen.

I didn't say I'm stock, I've got a 5.0 Ford in it. But if a stock FD runs about a 14, then I guess I did OK.

Thanks for the input,
Kerry

Guess I missed that part... I retract my statement

The tolerance level on the forum has evolved lol, I can't believe Kerry just told everyone he has a 5.0 in his FB without starting a flame war. Impressive

82 NA VS 93 TT

I own and dearly love my 82 NA RX7 it's lots of fun and well balanced and great to drive but I would not dare to compair it to my 93 Twin Turbo. The turbo from 4500 RPM up is astonishing and just a league above the original first gen. Now the first gen has run rallies and every free moment I can scam at Elkhart lake for 18 years without a major breakdown or repair other than normal wear parts. I feel the temptation to stand on the 3rd gen car will up the maintenance issues. But then again what fun is hell on wheels if we dont use it?
5.0 L in a RX body ? Can ou say toaster oven in the summer? I admire your engineering skills but owned a 63 Corvette and nearly died of heat exhaustion. Good luck with the HIbred and happy cooking.

Wow! Thanks, guys. I can't believe I didn't get flamed. I'm still working with the cooling system, toddah (I didn't know they had summer in WI). Works quiet well unless I'm stuck in traffic on a 100° day with the A/C on (blows 40° air). The engine may cook, but I'll be comfy! I'll eventually get the puzzle solved. Were all the FD's turbo, or are there N/A versions? I'm still trying to get a benchmark.

Thanks again
Kerry

All FD's are turbo, assuming that the turbos are actually spooling... There are a lot of poorly maintained FD's out there that don't have much power anymore. Or it could have been an auto... :o

Or it could be the FD was holding back hoping to get you to run for money a little later...

Just because I think he commited a crime against humanity by "boinging out" his Fb is by no means reason to flame the guy, besides at least the car is not in the junkyard. More rx-7's are in abilene's junkyards than its roadways.

Most (circa93) Magazine testing put the STOCK fd (93-95) at 14.0<>14.2 sec @100<>110mph in the Quarter and 175+mph top end.
Basic upgrades (DP CatBack Intake) puts them into the high 13's

Hey Kerry you aren't alone, I finished mounting my 302 last night, I'll be looking for an FD soon. Mods on the engine I'm putting in are ported heads, cam, valves, Edelbrock performer aluminum intake manifold, Holley 4 bbl 650 CFM carb. The wheel gap is about as long as my middle finger in the front but the batter and custom rad arent in yet. How's the wheelspin on yours? I'm runnin a T5 from an 88GT and was kinda wondering how the 185's will hold up.

1dollar, Excellent point.
Rotaries are not thermally efficient, that is to say they produce more waste heat per HP than most engines.

Rotory engines produce exhaust gases that can get up to 400 degrees hotter than the exhaust of a piston engine. The problem Kerry is working on is having a 5.0 crammed into a small car. The engine's heat doesn't have room to disapate(sp?) so it all gets trapped under the hood. We all know heat is an engines worse enemy. I do agree with yayarx7. Putting a piston engine in an RX-7 is a crime against humanity, but I guess the forum jury has found you not guilty. Maybe by reasons of insanity?? Just kidding. Its all good, as long as you can go fast.

****, i love rotarys but man I almost have thought about doing it. Id been done by now

I got a LONG *** list of parts I still need, and its really pissing me off !!!

To each their own, at least when he has a problem he cant figure out, he has no problem finding someone who knows a 5.0
