Be strong! Get a good grib and turn it counter clock-wise! It will come off... have fun.

Pull the shift boot cover down, under it you will find a locking nut. Use a crescent wrench to break the nut loose, unscrew the ****,

Just loosen up that little locking nut, then turn the car upside down and shake it, the **** will come right off. Ask me how I know.

mazda also puts a dab of glue on the threads. that lock nut isnt very tight at all. on the 84-85, just turn counter clockwise.

No pics, it was a mind experiment.

Well yeh now that I've given it some more thought I can see you would have to shake it pretty hard for a long time to get the shifter **** to unscrew after loosening the locking ring, so I think I should retract my suggestion. Best to do it the old fashioned way, turn the **** counterclockwise until it comes off. My apologies to anyone who might have tried the vehicle inversion method.
