The SE I'm restoring looks as good and has some pluses and minuses:

-no power steering
-160k miles
-need to re-install OEM Clarion radiohead after removing Pioneer CD
+have both cloth and leather seats in mint condition
+no silly pinstripes
+85SE is a little better year than 84SE

Nevertheless, a mint original like that is worth 3-4k easy.

Plenty of 7's that fetch that money or more in Australia! A friend of mine sold his SA with 13b turbo and lots of good bits for $12,000AUD or so

See where I'm heading.
I know of guys that have spent more than that on their 7's and are not half as clean as that one. Only thing they may have over it is a streetported motor but that is not worth 7k to me.
Personally I would deduct 1k because of that rubber antenna.
yep. we did one in 98-99, just cosmetic work (no mechanical, didnt even open the hood) the bill was 11k.... it did look great though. 81 gs, in the U2 blue with black interior.

i did another 84 gsl-se, it wasnt quite as nice, but it had 78k on it, i think i spent 3000 on paint alone, and maybe another 2k in mouldings and lenses and stuff.

i could go on, but the best deal and the nicest 1st gen out of all 15 or so ive had is my 79. 91k, all original body and paint, except the rear bumper...

This is getting interesting. Each of my 7s is within an ace of being back to showroom condition.

And my power antennas work.

I like these car dealers, they get so hyped up. Rare model, rare optioned P/S.
Picked up a new car from a dealer that was advertising the RX-7 as:

"This is a rare, collector Sport Car out of the mid eighties"

It's just an '84 GSL of which they sold approximately 15 brazillion.

Oddly, it's a non-PS car. I've never seen a Series 3 GSL with manual steering.

I'm not sure they made that many 84GSLs, but don't know the right number.

Looks like a $5,000 car to me

The GSL-SE is a nice one, and I agree it would cost a lot to make one this nice, once it has deteriorated. I have two 1984 GSLs, both with manual steering, and I bought them both with dead motors, one with 84 K on the clock for $500 about 8 years ago, the other with 63k and a leather interior 4 years ago for $1500. I have the stock and glass sunroofs for both.

I drive them both, and I have owned several others, and I have to say the cloth seats are definitely more comfortable. My red/silver one was originally black, and the interior is very nice, same rasberry color, but not as nice as the one for sale here.

My beige one has brown leather, is about as nice as the one pictured, original paint except where I repainted the hood and one repaired fender. People told me I paid too much for this one at $1500, but I think it was a bargain. Hey, the interior is worth that. I have been offered $10k for it with the Ford V8, but I have more than that invested.

The car pictured may have no body rust, but the engine compartment definitely shows signs of some corrosion - it has not always been in the desert. Hey, Newport Beach is a salt air environment.

It is hard to establish a value when they get this old. You have to ask yourself what else you can buy for the same price that would as nice, as reliable and as much fun to own?????? You are definitely taking more of a risk on the engine with an old rotary than you would be with a comparable mileage piston powered car.
