saltyslug: Yes, there is an easier upgrade with the 2nd gen coil. I just posted this in the TT thread because someone asked the same thing. If you follow these two threads, you can do the simple upgrade now and leave the ignitor in place if you want to do the TT box later.

It is still a good and simple upgrade. It is basically just replacing the coil (uses the stock 1st gen ignitor to fire it). The problem is that these instructions tell you to remove the 2nd gen ignitor. If you do, then you can't do the TT.

Check this thread as well: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/ignition-2gcdfis-diagram-correct-502148/ I listed how you can do the regular 2GCDFIS without cutting the wires. This way you can easily switch to the TT later.

Step 1. Buy an MSD.

Step 2. Install the MSD.

Step 3. Profit.

The whole non MSD direct fire stuff is the ignition equivalent of putting a cone air filter on a Civic. The effect is mostly psychological, from what I've seen, unless your ignition system was marginal in the first place.

The MSD is a completely different league, and should be the first step.
