Two years Two Motors, what's going on?

Greetings all.

Just openned up anther motor (12A) last night and found out both rotor housing is all scraped by the edges of the chambers top and bottom. This is the second motor for this car in a two year period, and both motor experienced the same problem. The only difference between these two motor is that, the second motor I openned up last night does not have a blown seal, just simply scored housings. Does any wizard here knows a reason for this? Any hypothesis?

Regards

-X

Oh, let's assume, the original and used (2nd) motors for this car were sound to start out with, so that we can limit/focus the reasoning on the "post-implant-enviroments".

That's my first thought, acutally, it would go pretty well with rrluthi's idea since both housings (F&R) are scored in the same motor, which might suggest a sompletly non-functioning OMP. I have been running premix (2 cycle synth) from time to time plus a regular dose of MMO, though, any other possibilities?

Lots of reasons but theres not enough info here to be precise.

1. Over revving the engine beyond 7-8k rpm on a regular basis
2. Not enought oil in the gas
3. Out of balance
4. Worn bearings

So when you rebuilt the second motor and put it in what did you replace and what was reused. You rebuilt the second motor right ?

Are you talking about chome flake or scoring near the center of the housings? If it is chome flake, it is pretty common. I believe it is due to a thinner coating at the edges. Do you have pics of the damage? Was the 2nd motor opened before/rebuilt or is it a high mileage engine?

Let me shoot several photos when I get to the garage tomorrow, I just moved and the car is about one hour away from me.

Farrel: I did not rebuild neither motor, and I am trying to rebuild it now, since I just gathered all parts for a turbo setup, then found out all rotor housings of two motors are useless. I did rev in the 7k to 8k range everyday, and thought that's how a RE should be treated. Yes both motor got about 80k, they are used and high miles I guess.

Addict: There are chrome flakes, however it looks like the nitrate coating was scraped. I will bring photos.

I am thinking about what to do with this car now. One option is that I can actually just get rid of it and find something else that is fun and sell the extra parts that I got .... but it doesn't feel good in the guts. If I got a good pair of rotor housing, I should be now ordering rebuild kit and start porting already... But with given situation, I don't see this as a good investment as compared to other possible alternatives.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks

I've seen some rotary motors last over 200k and some blow at 65k. One thing us rotorheads need to constantly do is keep a close eye under the hood at our beloved motors! I'm looking under the hood at least every other day. I have a rebuilt 12a that was ported about 5 years ago and now has well over 150k that runs stronger than some freshly ported motors. Its all due to regular checks of fluids and always looking for leaks, engine temp, oil changes etc: You take car of it and it will last long and thus take care of you. By the way my motor is pampered. We run this little beast past 7k all the time and still no smoke...Hang in there and dont give up on rotary engine!
