high flow cats

Well it looks like that I'm going to have to make a compromise on my RB exhaust system. My dad is insisting that I have to pass emissions and KEEP a catalitic converter on my car.

So my solution for the exhaust was to get a RB header with a high flow cat to replace the presilencer, and a power pulse muffler.

I know that the RB high flow cats dont require air injection and outperform out stock cats, but my dad wants proof that the highflow cats outperform our stock cats before he lets me get my exhaust.

Does anybody know where I can find proof of the high flow cats outperforming our stock cats?

I would move out first before conforming to the SMOG test.

GIve the Bonez unit a look see, at RxRotary Performance
I run the '83 unit to pass every other year, but fill it still give good power when installed. VS the old stock 2-3 piece units.

I would start by removing the cat and presentimh him with the 20 year old most likely hollowed out and possibly rusty peice of exhaust. I would also send an email to RB and ask them im sure they would help you out. Specially considering you are tryign to convince you father to let you purchase wares form them.

Question?

I have been a long time customer of Racing Beat, when did they start carrying street legal converters?

I just went to their website and did not see any listed for the '81-85 Rx-7.

well I cant move out yet, I turn 18 in august, and I have to get smog done in july. Talk about bad timing.

My situation with my current cats is quite unusual. I had to hollow my one year old main cat out because it melted. Basically as far as I can tell, the first two cats came apart, clogging the main cat and causing it to melt. This would explain the crappy performance of my old enigne.

Anyway to get the car driveable with my new enigne I had to hollow out the main cat. The funny thing is, the main cat is less than one year old.

So to conform to my fathers wishes I would have to replace all three cats, which would cost over $2500. He insists that I should sue the oem converters.

As for the street legal converters issue, mazdatrix not racing beat, sells them as a "grey area" exhaust. As far as I know racingbeat does not sell converters. Basically they will pass the emissions test if there is no visual inspection. Washington state does not require a visual inspection.

Its kind of ironic how my car is so far from stock, and my dad is still being **** about having stock converters. I'm going to e-mail mazdatrix and see if they can help me out. Thanks guys.

well I got a reply from mazdatrix. They said that removing the first two converters will not hurt my emissions, as long as the acr is warmed up. The first 2 convertors only reduce emissions while the car is warming up.

They also said that the high flow cat performs about the same as the stock ones as far as reducing emissions goes.

In any which case, it was enough to convince my dad. After I move out, I'll probably put a presilencer in its place though.

The only thing that bugs me is if it will fit my chassis correctly. My car was origionally a 12a auto. So since I have my 13b now, I'm assuming that I need to get the GSL-SE setup. However there are different parts listed for the manual and automatic 12a cars. Do you guys think it will mount without requireing any fab work? Or will I have to mix and match 12a auto and GSL-SE exhaust parts like I do now? My car is a manual now, but the mounting spots for the exhaust might be different on either chassis.

Currently I have my 12a auto exhaust attached to a GSL-SE exhaust manifold.

I'm running a Summit high flo cat on my GSLSE, Racing Beat header and Rotary RX something or the other muffler. Passed emissions with flying colors.
