go to a parts store and pick up a few rolls of those shop towels. drain what's left of the oil and then wipe everything down. Check for split oil cooler lines or leaky banjo fittings. It wouldn't hurt to check the pan to see if you have a small puncture or leaky gasket either.

According to your profile you have an 81 so my guesses as to the source would be: (in order)

1) the oil rings under the oil filter pedestal
2) your oil cooler sprung a leak
or
3) your oil lines/banjo fittings are funkt up.

Good luck with the diagnosis!

My 79 GS was leaking from the 1) the oil rings under the oil filter pedestal. Everything underneath it, was soaking in oil. So I took the oil filter off, undo the pedestal, clean the surface, and used those red silicon gasket maker on the mating side. I didn't even replace the oil rings. It is still working good on me. It was easy to do too, only took me 30mins.

i just recently finished capin up all my oil leaks

the longer oil line had a hole in it so that was soaked in oil, as was everything else around it..
and also the lines froming from the oil pump had a tiny hole in it.

Take it to the carwash and clean the entire engine bay with the high pressure soap. Then start the car and look for the leak.

Car wash

Yea a car wash is you best bet to clean the engine up enough to spot where the leak really is.

But one word of warning. Be prepared to get stuck at the car wash for a good 30 min. Every time I have washed my cars engine--both a 12a and an 13b, I had problems with the engine running right.

The 12a just didn't want to start--even though any other time the car starts right up. Eventually it will.

The 13b (GSL-SE) starts but runs real bad--acts like fuel delivery is lean and timing is off. After about 10 min. of driving it gets back to normal.

Definitely cover up the distributer area with rags, and the same goes for your air filter intake.

I'm sure others have had this problem and will speak up with words of advice--I know I'd like to hear from them.

Good Luck, Scott

I don't cover anything up, but,,,,,,
I take paper towels and WD-40 with me. The (12A) motor almost always fails to start when I'm done. I try it once (starting) and if it doesn't fire right up, I pull the dist. cap and dry it up. Since you don't even need tools, I don't get delayed by more than 10 minutes. My cars may look like complete piles of crap on the outside sometimes,,,,,,but the engines will pass the "white glove test"! After enough trips to the car wash with engine degreaser (bring your own, it works much better) and I am certain it can't get any cleaner, I use the high pressure WAX (and rinse). I think having it waxed helps keep the dirt from sticking and future washing is a breeze. I like knowing I have a fluid leak immeadiately and if it is clean to start with it is easy to spot.
I also re-lube the carb linkages so they won't freeze up.
