help oil cooler problem

Hi all:

I need a little info. I had a bad oil leak from the bottom of the "bee hive" oil cooler on a 1984 12A engine. This was both sitting and with the engine on.

With knowlege gained from this forum, I diagnosed the leak as failed "O" rings. While taking off the water hoses and the bolt for the "banjo" fitting, I made a mistake and inadverdantly loosened two nuts which in the picture in both the Haynes and factory service manuals said specifically "do not loosen" These are apparently holding the oil filter unit to the cooling fin assembly.

After taking off the correct nuts and the bolt for the oil cooler, changinng the "O" rings and reassembling in the reverse order, I have another oil leak (about half of the previous one and not while the engine is off) I think this is could be the wrong nuts I removed. It also could be that I did not replace the old crush washers on the bolt for the "banjo" fitting.

Any help input or suggestions woulld be gratefully accepted(I am afraid that I might catch the leaking oil on the exhaust pipe under the car afire while driving.)

Rotarys forever and ever Amen.

I have heard of others removing those bolts with no issues, so I would guess that you need the washers for the banjo bolts. Although I reused mine without issue....

yea those banjo bolt washers are not a problem. i've re-used the **** out of them with success. you probably got an o-ring sidestepped a little. it's easy to do on the beehives. what brand o-rings are you using?

sorry to dig this 3 year old thread up but it explains my problem exactly... while replacing the bee hive oil cooler I found the 2 upper O-rings and was trying to figure out why everyone on this forum says there are 4 to replace?

So one thread I found says the other two are lower on the oil cooler assembly so I take off the bottom part (this is the part that people say the manual warns to not take off). There are two hard plastic gaskets here and not rubber O-rings? I replace the top ones and left the bottom hard plastic ones there alone, oil leaking. I take the whole thing apart again and try to fit O-rings in the bottom ontop of the hard plastic gaskets and I get even more leaking???

Please help I dont know what to do, Im going to use Silicone gasket tomorrow if I dont find anything else to do?
