Help! I need an answer QUICK!

I removed all the A/C system from my '80, and my question is: Did all the cars have A/C, and if NOT, is there a vent section which replaces the rather large box which previously housed the condenser? I hate to put that big empty box back on, but I don't want to waste time looking for a part that might not exist! Thanks for any pearls of wisdom anyone wants to bestow upon me. -WG

A/c was an option, But I don't think I've ever seen one without it. Guess I just haven't seen that many.

Post the pics of the airbox in question....my totaled '80 was a factory non-AC car from Colorado...I'll be able to answer the question definitively...need a pic, though....my Kodak digi is being borrowed for a while by a friend in college...

Here is a pic, the opening shown goes to the outlet of the blower fan and the square opening on the left goes to the heater core. This box has a sticker on the bottom that says it was made in Texas, so I'm assuming the A/C unit was added here in the U.S. I'm thimking of making a duct to replace this big, now-empty box. Unless I can find one fairly easily. Thanks for the replies! -Mike

Unless it's raining on my head tomorrow, I'll take a look at mine (the carcass is still in my driveway...) and compare it with the pic you provided...if it is smaller, I'll extract it and you can just pay shipping to get it to your casa...I don't know what kind of timetable you're on, though...what was involved in removing your box??

It takes quite a bit to get that sucker out! I had to fold back the carpet, take out the glovebox (which requires the removal of the little side filler panels in the dash), and disconnect the right side defroster duct before I could unbolt the box from the firewall, I also took out the blower fan at that time as it's been making noise. Turns out that the impeller is contacting the bottom of the housing, so all I have to do is add a small washer underneath the impeller to raise it a bit and it should be fine. It seems like it wouldn't be too hard to make a small connecting duct, just not sure what I would use. Thought about cardboard covered with black duct tape, but that's a little cheesy. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Same here...I guess Mazda didn't want to make two versions of HVAC controls...lazy bums...

the car is history, so how difficult is the job, then if you don't care how you beat up the carcass?

Someone82,
You wouldn't want to take a picture of that smaller duct, would you? I'd like to see what one looks like. If you're talking about the button in the middle of the fan ****, I think they ALL have that. I think I've heard that assembly referred to as the "logicon", but I could be mistaken.

Mike-
I would but I don't have a camera, If I remeber it's just a plastic duct like on the driver side (under the steering colum), just smaller. Like you said just make one out of some ducting from home depot or the like.

Mar3,
If the thing isn't as big as Texas, it should be a hell of a lot easier to get it out, especially if you're not too worried about the surrounding Japanese plastic. I appreciate the helping hand!
And Matt, thanks for the heads up about the duct.
Gonna go put the blower fan back together now. Later.
