heater's not that hot

Well, with the mornings dipping down in the 30's it's time to turn the 'ol heater on. Problem is, my heater isn't all that good. Even before I overhauled my cooling system with a new radiator and thermostat the heat wasn't that great. How are everyone else's heaters? Is the 1st Gen heater just weak or is it mine?

It's just yours.
Maybe the thermostat is stuck open?
Well, it is an indication that your radiator is cooling the engine well!

check if you get heat at the windshield and by your feet. my 84 only gives heat at those places ... i think it may be ducting or something. but all my past Rx-7s gave wicked heat ...

hmmm, okay so it appears that it's just mine. The thermostat is a reasonable item to replace except I just replaced mine with a genuine Mazda part. My heater was crappy with the old thermostat and it's still crappy with the new one. Although it's possible that my new thermostat is bad I would tend to think it's fine. Any other ideas as to what could cause this? Thanks for the feedback!

Ya know..... come to think of it, I don't think I get heat out of the dash vents.

A plugged-up heater core comes to mind, as does a disconnected or malfunctioning heater valve.
Drain the entire system and see if you can blow through the heater core with the switch set to "hot". That's the surest method. -WG

Thanks, sounds like good advice, I'll give it try. So...if I can't blow through the heater core then it's probably a clogged heater core. If I can blow threw it then it could be the valve. Do I have that right?

Oye! Them parts is expensive from VB.

Same here.

Anyone ever experince little air flow from the vents? I checked my air ducting and it all in tact. I hear the fan motor blowing pretty hard, but only a little draft comes out compared to other cars I've owned or driven.

Mine was like that, but I found a duct disconnected. I put it back on, and I was about 6 inches from the dash, flipped the fan on high and litterly blew my baseball hat off my head . No problems now . Also, with the heater problem, I had that same problem with mine. It was a clogged heater core. I just back-flushed the system, no more problems .

Sometimes the cable that opens the valve gets kinked or disconnected so that the hot water never flows through the heater core. When you drain the system and blow through it, if the valve is good, you should be able to blow through when it is in the "hot" position, and NOT be able to blow through it when in the "cold" position. Once you have ascertained that the valve is operating, the heater core itself is about all that's left. The heater core has more restriction than a regular radiator, so frequently scale and crud ends up lodging in it. Like RMD said, you can sometimes backflush the core and get it flowing. Then, it helps to run some radiator flush through the whole system. Also, the blower inlet is up under the cowl and leaves and debris can obscure the inlet which will definitely cut down on the airflow. It's no fun but the best bet is to remove the blower motor assy. and make sure that the inlet is clear and there is no debris in the fan itself. (Like that damned leaf in mine presently) The ducting system on 1st Gens. is pretty wierd, it could be a disconnected duct but then you would still have hot air movement, just not where you want it.

well mine works great (only to the windshield or floor) but does anyone else have the problem that the temp control **** is either all heat or no heat? Generally I have to have some heat, so I'll leave it hot and crack the windows... it sucks.

It get's so damn hot that I was afraid it was going to melt my freaking shoe...

course my car run warm too... can't help.

Yanke the heater hoses off of the heater core and backflush the core a few times until the water comes out clean.

You'd be amazed at the crap that accumulates, and the difference that it will make.
