Unhappy Hard to crank, clicking when in "On" position.

My starter went out, I bought a rebuilt one from Autozone to replace it. It had a constant very rapid clicking after replacement and is hard to start. It makes a very loud "WHIRRRR" noise and after a few tries eventually you would hear a quick grind and it would crank. Had my battery tested, it wasn't holding the proper charge. Got a new one, replaced the battery cables with new 4 gauge wire. Still same problem. Over a week or two my battery gauge would read lower and lower each time I went to crank until sometimes it was too low to crank (usually 11.8, before it would be 12.1). Replaced the alt thinking that it might be draining the battery, still a clicking and hard to crank.

The only thing I can imagine is that the rebuilt starter has a bad solenoid so it's making that click due to high internal resistance. With the old starter I would get roughly 12.7 volts in the on position and 13.8 at idle. Now I get 12.0 in the on position, 13.1 or 2 at idle. I have exhausted everything I can think of. Help please!

you better believe it, autozone sells crap or cheap quality rebuilt parts. I dont give a **** if they offer a lifetime warranty when you have to replace it with another crap a few months later. There are several forum members at pendelton with FCs. ask them if you can borrower a FC starter for testing

One of the bolts that holds the starter in place has the head stripped off so I can't remove it until I can get it to the DIY auto shop so I can get the tool to pull it out. I went to crank it today, as usual it was undercharged so I had a friend give me a jump. It wouldn't crank the first couple times and I ended up flooding the engine. While attempting a quick unflood (I don't have the tools on me to pull the plugs) I pulled out the fuel pump fuse and when I did the clicking noise went away. When I put it back in, it returned. I still think my starter is bad but what would cause my fuel pump to have a clicking?

I'm confused as hell right now, ever since my starter went out it's been a mess.

Are you saying fix the flooded engine or fix the other issues? I found proceedures for unflooding it, right now I'm trying the first one, just letting it sit for 5 or 6 hours. Once I get it unflooded I will update here on if the starter is bad which I suspect it is.

R u joking? 5-6 hours? Just pour a capful of oil on each barrell, handcrank the motor for about 5 full revolution, install new plugs or dryj/clean plugs and start away. Be sure to have strong battery

We flooded a GSL-SE and resorted to pushing the car down a big hill at home. Poped the clutch from second gear and started right up. The starter with a good battery will produce about 250 RPM. The big hill, 2500 RPM. If you don't have a big hill a tow rope and pull car work also. Just make sure you get back on the clutch/brake when it startes.

I rethreaded the start post and it was cranking up far easier now. However now it won't crank at all... I started a new thread about it here: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/fuel-compression-spark-but-no-start-985565/
