Gutless!!
took my '82 GS out for the first time today, it doesn't go past 55!! WTF!!!
Could it be bad gas, as it did set for two years previous to me owning it.
What about timing?
I need help as i need this thing drivable ASAP, trying to sell truck to go back to college and this is to be the commuter.

well if I was you I would start off with a full tune up. Replace your dist. cap, dist rotor, plugs, wires, all the filters, oil, all the maintenance stuff. From that point I would check you timing and make sure there is no major vacuum leaks... Can you describe what it is doing in more details? Is it backfiring loudly and hesitating and stuff?
Edit: oh yes and test compression!!!

I often find the circuit that leads frm the front-most primary venturi to the secendary throttle shaft vacuum box filled with tar-like oil residue. Presumably this comes from OMP oil getting sucked Secondaries can't open.

I drove my car with the secondaries disconnected for a while last year. Had no problem cruising at 80+ on the freeway, just took a while to get there.
Verify that you have spark on your leading ignition. Check your timing. Replace fuel filter. Consider carb rebuild.

It'll run just fine at idle, a little rough & high (1500-2000) but it will idle. Wont go any faster than 55 in any gear that it should be able to; 4th tops out about 45 and to reach 55 it takes close to a mile.
No poping of backfireing but does puff a bit of smoke when coming back down from high rpm(6k). Plugs are brand new and wires/rotor/cap are in great shape as they are off of my '85 GSL (dizzy and all because the old one had no spark).
Where is the return spring? Is it the one on the rearmost of the carb?
NO cats just flomaster for now.
I'll check the fuel filter, going to change oil soon as possible, just want to figure out if its worth the time and then figure out that the engine is no good (150,000).
Anything else?

I had the exact same problem, did a complete tune up had compression checked and it was the CAT right behind the heat exchanger. if you don't hav that anymore you might want to make sure something didn't crawl up the tailpipe while it was sitting and make a nest or something??? Also, by the time it made it to it's worst prerfomance, it would not go over 4000 rpm. Good Luck

I hit 62 today!! then the throttle stuck.
What is the linkage at the rear of the carb, the one that when moved correctly will flip upside-down? my 85 has this as well as the 82 but on the 82 it was held together with twist ties.

I lied, it does have a bit of a bucking sensation, not very noticable but it is there, had to concentrate on what I was looking for. Hope that helps.
