Front Spindles

Can you put -SE rotors and calipers on the 84-85 big bearing 12a spindles?

Are there any negative issues with the large spindles?

The reason I ask is I am ordering the TTT front coil overs and they can provide either size. I have 2 Rx-7s, one with -SE suspension. If I could get the bigger size and be able to use the coil overs on either car would obviously give me the greatest options.

Thanks

All 84/85 spindles are the same - so the answer is yes - SE rotors and calipers will fit all 84/85 spindles.

If I put big spindles on an 82, all I need are new bearings and rotors right? All else is the same?

I also heard that the big spindles are better for racing.

Is that true?

I can't speak about the racing part, but to put SE brakes on 84/85 12A spindle you need SE bearings, rotors, calipers, caliper bracket, and backing plate. Not sure about the brake soft line. Might as well put new ones on. I went with steal braided.

No I was wondering if there are any mods needed to the 12a brakes if I just switch from the small to the big spindles

I know I need new bearings and rotors to accomodate the different size.

If you stay with the 12a 4x110 parts, all you need is new bearings and 84/85 rotor... the caliper and caliper bracket will be the same.

FYI, the inner bearing and seal is the same on all first gens, it's only the outer bearing that is larger for the 84/85. I just put 84/85 spindles on my 83 project last week and was able to reuse the inner bearing (it was only a few years old)

If you order them spindleless you could mount the knuckles and hubs from a TII...thus coilovers and bbk all in one

All of the first gen spindles are to damn small but the 84-85 spindles seem to be stronger and are desirable for racing.

Before you spend a bunch of money on a set of spindles (big tubes, coil over conversion, etc) have them magnafluxed to check for cracks. Also, in racing applications it is a good idea to check the included angle when doing an alignment. I believe the measurement is 12 degrees and if this changes or your camber adjustments start changing when nothing has been adjusted; the spindle(s) are suspect. They do fail in racing - seen it myself.

By the way, the FC spindles are chunkier with a larger inner wheel bearing. However, FC outer wheel bearing are the same as the ones used on an 84-85 FB.
