FlywheelRepair

I put on my flywheel and started to put in the clutch and found a stripped hole on the flywheel. Anyone have any recommendatrions on what to do? I'd hate to cause an inbalance on the rotating assembly by using a helicol or a bigger bolt and retapping. Oh, and it happened on one of the alignment holes...
Thanks

I'd tray to tap it and not use a heli-coil.

Sweet thanks. The one that stripped is one of the two the "studs" that lines up the pressure plate. Will 8x1.0 go straight in without drilling it out some?
Thanks

8mmX 1.0mm is the correct original thread for the bolt that was in the flywheel. If there are insufficient/damaged threads that are beyond cleaning up with proper tap, then helicoil is the way to go. As far as causing an imbalance, the metal removed drilling the hole larger to accomodate helicoil will be restored with insertion of helicoil and then (re)installing the proper bolt -difference in weight is next to nothing. Important thing is to restore even clamping of pressure plate to flywheel.

Ran a tap through it and there seem to be threads in the hole. It looks like the bolt may be 3-5mm short. Is this possible? I am using an Exedy clutch kit.
Thanks

I ran into a similar problem on my old GXL. A bolt was broken off flush to the flyweel. I just used 5 bolts with extra loctite. It lasted probably 30,000 miles no problems then i sold the car.

Yes, I am using the two "studded" bolts in the holes that are reamed at the top. The rest of the bolts go through the fully threaded holes. I did get a longer than factory bolt and the threads are stripped.

What does everyone think about tapping to a 3/8-16 or 24...? 3/8-16 tap is the closest size for that hole and I think I can just run the tap through it. I would run it through the pressure plate and the hole at the same time so both will be aligned.

I agree tapping should be fine. I don't think you will remove more then a gram by doing so.

I went ahead and tapped 3/8-16 and the shorter bolt was only 2 grams more than the original by the time I machined some of the head off. Worked well.
