flywheel question

flywheel question

I have 1979 Rx7 and bought a new clutch kit, however once I got the clutch off I realized that a few teeth on the flywheel are ripped up pretty bad. I was going to replace it but it seems that the flywheel for this car is completely impossible to find.

Might someone lead me in the direction to find one for purchase?

New or used would be nice, don't care as long as it is decent condition.

Oh, the car is stock 1979 no mods.

also, try the for sale wanted section in the classifieds section. welcome to the forum. also, any flywheel from 79-88 will work, as long as its for the non turbo engine. there were differences in clutch sizes due to difference in flywheel surface area. 74-82 are the same and 82-88 are the same.

gonzz about how much are you asking for the flywheel and is it in good condition?

Second question, I know on some older vehicles you can take off the ring gear from the flywheel and replace just that, can you do that with a 79 flywheel?

Sorry for the ignorace, but just getting into fixing this little bad boy up.

I hope you're not talking about swapping in a later flywheel. You are just talking about trying to change ring gears, aren't you guys? Hey, I've got an '83 flywheel I could sell you for real cheap. It even came off of a 12A!

Try to guess who is feeding you bad info.

Actually I was wondering if the ring gear can be changed. I have a 12A engine and will not put a later flywheel on it.

Basically I don't think the newer ones would fit on there anyways, not to mention mechanical problems once I got it into place.

The counterweights are built into the flywheels, and the counterweight must match the rotating assembly. You need a 79-82 flywheel.

Nope, he needs a '79-80 flywheel. However, if he's interested in changine the front counterweight to the '81-'82 style, he could install an '81-'82 flywheel. It's the lightest stock US spec 12A flywheel ever made.

The newer ones ('83-'85) might fit (you'd need a different side cover on the intake.exhuast side of the engine), but wouldn't match the rotors' weights and would therefore vibrate and kill the rear stationary bearing.

I also don't think the ring gear can be removed without damage. Just get yourself another '79-'80 flywheel and you'll be good to go.

I've seen a '82 flywheel on a '79 - worked fine. To be absolutely correct, Jeff20B is right - you need the front weight as well. Worthwhile upgrade - the '79 flywheel is a pig.

Jeff20B is correct about the weights.
Ring gears can be removed and replaced. Never done it myself - I think you need to heat it to remove it. A new one is ~ $50.
79-80 and 83-85 flywheels are pigs.
