Don't go to Showcase Mazda! In fact, I'd avoid pretty much all of the Mazda dealerships, as they've had very little experience working on RX-7's over the years, and will give you an engine diagnosis that's way off.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any other good repair shops other than my garage for my own car! After getting screwed by Showcase a few years ago, I commited that my car would never see another dealer service bay - I got serious about doing my own work, and have learned a lot and figured out more of this on my own than the dealer would ever be able to do.

What kind of work are you interested in doing?

Rough Idle

I'm restoring an '83 GS. I've got the engine running - replaced plugs, wires, rotor, rotor cap, vacuum hoses. The car starts fine cold but once it warms up it idles a little rough (sounds like mild back firing now and then). If I stomp the pedal, the engine wants to die.

It runs smooth at any speed but idle. I did run it up to 7000RPM yesterday, quickly let off the gas and it back fired immediately but then coasted on down to 750 RPM with that slight roughness.

I've sprayed carb cleaner all around the carburetor to see if I can find a vacuum leak but it hasn't made any difference.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

there is a guy in phoenix who got the US mazda mechanic award for one year, meaning he's the best of the best. his name is bill brockhurst, a friend of my father, and a friend of mine. i will try and get his number if you so desire. he works at one of the mazda dealerships i believe, and im not sure how many are out there, but im sure its not much. PM me if you want to contact him.
