FC Intake/Throttle Body

I have an '85 GSL-SE and I'm trying to get more power out of it. So I came up with this idea (actually it was andrew's idea ) to use a 88-91 N/A Intake/Throttle Body along with the 88-91 ECU and keep the GSL-SE injectors. Does it sound workable?

Thanks

-Jeremy

It's a great idea if your going to port the engine to match the intake runners of the newer intake. The 2nd Gen ones are larger and will bolt on, but will not match the sizes of the SE. Which would mean restriction/turbulence = Bad.

88-91 ECU on the GSL-SE?
I don't think it would would work. Besides the SE only has 2 injectors to the FC's 4. You might be better off with a Haltech F9, Wolf3D, or SDS aftermarket system to control the Fuel injection only.

Check Paul's web site about how he used a complete 2nd Gen N/A engine with ECU into his GSL. He might be able to offer more advice.

More problems, the engines are of different compression, and the 89-91 has the lighter rotating mass, so the ECU will not be perfect, have to get an SAFC. you will have to rewire the whole engine, and get a whole wire harness from a donor, and then like Directfreak says, its not a bolt on intake. you can get it all to work and get another 10HP for weeks and weeks of labor.
what mods have you already done?

I have no mods at all right now. I'm shooting for 200+ horsepower at the flywheel though 200rwhp would be awesome.

What mods will make that kind of power?
A street port with a homemade cold air intake and full RB exhaust? What else would I need? Bigger injectors? An aftermarket ECU? I still want *pretty* good gas mileage and I would like to keep the car n/a.

Thank you all again

well with the amount of work and money, you might be better off putting in a TII engine in there

If you're going to port it, and keep it Fuel Injected, then do what I previously stated earlier.

Do a real streetport (not a mild one), Port match the 89-91 Intake, get and aftermarket ECU - (Haltech F9, Wolf 3D, SDS<-Cheapest). You'll be able to run 4 injectors, so you won't stress the duty cycle of the injecotrs at all, and you WILL obtain over 200hp.

EDIT: and you will be 50% of the way done if you ever want to slap a turbo on it

A good exhaust with headers, and a good intake flow (minimal bends) will definately be required though.

I had a Streetported SE with the stock FI, and I was at about 200hp (+-5) before. And that was with the Stock FI system (restrictive RE-EGI), headers, and exhaust. It can be done.

If you want it easier without the FI, get a Dellorto Carb setup with the streetport.

Go with a FC engine and intake. And get a Haltech! I'm going to go to haltech because the stock ECU is good just for stock. I got my 86' engine for $200 in a totaled FC! Good luck!

All that work to get the stock ECU in there and you're not gonna use it? Man that sucks...

Wait a minute.....I plan on putting an 86-88 motor into my GSL-SE. I just happened to come across 89+ rotors cheap so I bought them. My initial intention was using the 2nd gen intake but plugging the secondary injector bungs and using the stock EFI. So how will engine compression affect the stock ECU? Please clarify. If it does indeed then I have been misinformed.

The 86-88 motor has the same compression as the -SE but lighter rotors by a pound and a half, I do not see why changing the rotor weights or compression would affect a FI system, as far as needing to remap it.
