Fan setups

I'm going through this new car and keep finding things. I put in the sway bar the second owner (of 6 months) gave away and found Tokico paperwork for the adjustable shocks and springs, a bag of front end bushings - 500 bucks of good stuff. There's all sorts of Mazda factory racing parts catalogs, Racing Beat and Mazdatrix catalogs and price lists, a 99 Victoria British catalog, even a bottle of ATF in a storage bin.

Then there's this fan.

Do all 12As have clutched fans? Is the clutch electric or centrifugal? I don't mind going electric with a black magic setup buy I haven't looked into it yet and don't know how much fitting is required. Basically, the fan in my car is just bolted, straight up, to the water pump. Sure it does well at 1 and 2 grand, but past 4,000 rpm it sounds like an F-18 doing touch-and-gos. If this is normal, I'm going electric ASAP, otherwise I might get a clutched fan.

The stock fan is clutched, mechanically, to the water pump. Sounds like he might have just put on a universal fan straight to the water pump pully. That cant be good for HP cause of the parasitic drag from all that wind resistance, etc, but Im sure it does the cooling job. My electric fan keeps my car nice and cold though too...

It robs the crap out of some horsepower in that car . It took forever to get it up to 6k rpm. Ran much warmer than my '84 with the electric fan too. I'd advise investing in the electric.

And where did you find all of that stuff? Granted I didn't look too hard around.

Is there a Permacool or Black Magic setup that fits easily? What about part numbers? Are you guys using one thermostatic fan, one thermo and one switched, two thermos, or what? Basically, what's a good way to go for a strictly weekend warrior? I can't get to the car at all during the week.

And Tim, the sway bar was in the back and the bushings, catalogs, manuals, price sheets, and Tokico receipts were in the driver's side bin. Seeing as I spent $500 in trailering and gas, it still comes out pretty well. Now to patch the tire that went flat on her first day out here.....

Oh, and as much time as I spent making my own avatar, you have 250 posts and are still using that?

Black Magic M150 is what I have, its a universal fit, I made custom brackets, looks real good IMO. the M150 is thermostat controlled, theres a little probe you push through the fins near the upper rad hose. My installation of the fan was somewhat spread out as far as time goes, but you could do it in a afternoon I'm sure. So far I'm very happy with it.

I already had the fan itself in, but I just put in a new thermostat control tonight, took me like 45 mins. Of course, I had everything I needed because I knew what I needed from doing it before, and I had also done it before, so that might have speeded it up a little too.

Uh, replace that tire, don't patch it. Not worth the money. Those things are so dry rotted they aren't worth anything. And generally the fan setups I have seen are single fan, with thermostat control. I think the thermostat on mine was set at like 165. It was really low (also why it always ran for a minute after I shut the car down).

And that is a custom avatar I'm using. Haven't changed it in a while. I should put the pic of the R8 I took at road atlanta at night in. It was a good picture

I've been looking at the Flex-a-lite Twinline Dual Electric Fans. They come very close to being a perfect fit for the 1980 radiator I'm using. Anyone use this fan?

Mines actually not a Black Magic. Its a no name fan that was in the back of the car when I got it from the junk yard, haha . I didnt know what to call it in my signature, so its a "black Magic", haha. It looks a lot like a Hayden that Ive seen at autoparts stores, but Its got lettering in some weird language on it. I dunno what it is. I just have a universal thermostat with the through radiator type probe controlling the temp, and its IGN wire is going straight to the battery so it will run for about a minute after the car is shut off just cooling down the water in the radiator. It works really well.

I recommend the fiero e-fan! That's what I'm using and it works wonders. You can pick 'em up for about $15 at a junkyard and then wire in a universal temp switch from pepboys (these are about $40) and BAM cheap e-fan. I actually have mine wired into my EMS, but that's a-whole-nother thing.

Good luck!

Yes, that seems to work great for the 83-85 radiator, but how about the smaller 79-82? How about a 93-02 firebird dual electric fan shroud?
