Is a single muffler with no pre silencer and or resonator going to bee too loud? Also whats a better diameter piping to go with on the 12a (stock), 2.5 (2 1/2) or 2.25 (2 1/4)?

 

I have a Borla XR1 3 inch center in/out with header and no resonator. Honestly, after 3 years, the packing in the muffler is worn out and so it is really LOUD (large flames on the overrun probably have something to do with that). I think its okay and kinda like it actually, but I do not drive the car every day. So to give an opinion to your question, if you drive it everyday, 2.5 in into a resonator + a good magnaflow or borla. I would just be sure to buy a muffler made out of stainless for the durability over regular mild steel. The sound will be good on the power but muted when just cruising or driving normally.

 

I did what you're proposing (headers - pipe - muffler), don't bother. You'll get it on there and then just end up taking it apart again to put a presilencer in.

As mentioned, don't use mild steel. The forceful pulses of a rotary will cause noise that will seep straight through mild steel.

If you're not going to be ported, it's easier to just get the RB single-pipe setup and go with that. It'll sound a hell of a lot better, and if you want to choose your own muffler, you can have a pipe and flange done up to bolt onto the stock center section connecting pipe.

Without a good presilencer *and* a good muffler, it sounds like the loudest, most pissed off honeybee you've ever heard in your life, sticking it's stinger right in your ears.

2.25 is good enough. I have 2.5 because I am in the middle of a turbo set-up... I think stock is around 1.75?

Also, if you do go custom, Get the RB pipes because they are 1/8th thick and hold the sound in better than the cheap muffler express places. Plus they hold up longer! Also, when they are welding it together, get stainless steel welding done, so it will not end up rusting after a winter or two.

 

for a DD id honestly go with 2" for the best results. MAYBE 2.25. i have 2.5 on mine and i wish id of went with smaller.

 

Ok, Ill probably go 2.25 than. No cat, single magnaflow, and if its too loud, Ill have another muffler added. I don't know what the piping thickness is, or weather or not its stainless or aluminized steel. Ill have to talk details, when I talk to the dude at Halifax Auto Sport, it isn't just a quickie muffler shop, its a performance/tuning shop.

 

youll be wasting time/money only going with one. id use the magnaflow as a presilencer and get a cheap borla for the main muffler

 

Hmmmm... These are making me rethink things...

I have the RB no-cat pipe coming in that replaces the stock two cats with one 2" pipe with no cats. I will keep the stock manifold and the stock exhaust that is on it. I am hoping that I get better performance and better gas mileage and a bit better sound. RB said it will make it louder... Real loud...

As I told RB, I will try this route out since the header, presilencer, pipes and then muffler are close to a grand when this one pipe will get me 2/3rds the performance for 150.

If it's to loud, I'll add a 27" magnaflow silencer, it works on full blown dodges running turbos it should work for this thing.

 

That's just silly. I have went the no presilencer route on my SA track car. I am running a RB header with 2" (yes 2"!) into a el cheapo universal 6" round muffler. It's not hardly any louder than than my turbo FB with 2.5" pipe, presilenser, and fleebay muffler. Jeezus has driven the SA and will tell you it's not that loud. If you are running a stock port engine, with maybe an aftermarket intake and carb, 2" pipe will be more than enough. Most people think bigger pipe always means better flow. This is not entirely true. You have to have the engine that needs more flow to go with it. Bigger pipe is where most of the noise is going to come from. I've been doing this long enough to know that louder isn't always better.

 

I thought that thing had a presilencer?! For one muffler that is hella quiet....

How do you think this gem is gonna sound when I get my new system fabbed of 2 1/4 piping, and no cat or presilencer, just straight pipe to single Magnaflow. Hopefully better than the Cherrybomb Turbo thats on the car now!

i have that exact muffler on my car and it sounds bad ***., i do have a RB header and presilencer too, but it still sounds good

I have 2 Magnaflows on the 1/2 bp with a 3" exhaust, it's way to loud, even at fast idle during warm up. Find an oval Borla for a pre-silencer. 4X9X14", center in, side out will fit just peachy.

Kgray put 2 Magnaflow on his SA. He brought the rear one up when he dropped his car off for a suspension upgrade. Even being in the rear, the Magnaflow melted the packing inside and there are little bits of it that rattle in the casing when the muffler is shaken. I don't think I want to know what kind of condition the one that's where the pre-silencer is.

With the Borla in the rear, his car sounds sweet. Someone posted a link to an online seller of Borlas that beats any other resellers I've seen. Don't recall the link, but it was posted within the last 3 weeks.

 

i posted a link... mine was $69. Oh and trochoid, you can always weld that 6" round one in place of the 4' round if you want to practice welding and see how bad the presilencer is!!! haha

Sorry guys, do you have noise limits on your exhaust systems in the States? I'm in South Africa in case you guys think I'm asking a stupid question. We do but it doesn't really get enforced. I have a 3" mandrel bent downpipe from turbo straight out with only one big *** muffler at the back. Its loud and I love it, measuring 135db. I've had the car as a daily for six years and didn't find the exaust note irritating.

 

The turbo really tames the exhaust note. You'd hate driving it without a turbo.

 

I agree! My brother in law has NA Bridge with 3" headers, 3" system with three silencers. Still louder than my car.
