ever had this?

OK, my car seems to loose all power at 5000 rmp in third and fourth gear (it will spit and sputter and try to choke out). Also, when driving slow it will kick a little (as if it is loping), and it just started backfiring upon decel and shutoff.

I noticed that my leading coil was arching on itself so I changed it but it still archs (from the screws to the center where the plug goes to the dizzy. What is causing the arch, and could that be my loss of power?
I have my fuel reg maxxed to 5.5 on the gauge and the fuel stays at the halfway point (cheap reg).

Im at a loss and my top speed is only 95 mph and I know it has more in it.

Im going to re-check timing, fuel delivery, connections, air/fuel mixture tonight.

O, it a stock 85 12a with a rebuild nikki, rb header, no rats nest cat or smog pump, air/oil cooler, new plugs, wires, dizzy cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and accel super coil on leading

peace

Sounds like you have a leaky coil wire for the leading coil. For that just get a new set of wires.

Put dielectric grease on your plug wire/coil wire boots. Check your cap/rotor and plugs for condition, and make sure the engine/body ground is good.

used silicon dielectric grease on all wires (coils, dizzy, and plugs) and all new 4 ga wire for power and ground and also added two grounds over stock (one on inner fender, one on firewall, one at the starter and one on top of the motor).

SOunds like high resistance somewhere in the circut. Bad plug? bad cap/rotor?

in my experience the Purolator pump you get from parts stores will peak at about 130hp, and that is if you run with no return line. You're probably still fuel-starving.

On the other hand, try removing the trailing lead from the distributor cap (ground it to a strut bolt or something to keep the coil from self destructing) and go for a quick drive. If the problem goes away, then your trailing timing is too advanced and the bucking you are feeling is detonation. It doesn't quite feel the same as how it feels on a piston engine.

yea I was just reviewing yaws site and he suggests a 10 deg split. The shop that I took the rex to set leading on the first mark and trailing on the second (thats a 20 deg split. Im going to adjust tonite and Ill keep ya posted. thanks for all the help everyone.

peejay- could that be the cause of the coil arching Im experiencing?

Hey if that doesnt work, switch around your ignitors and see if the problem persists.
I know it sounds dumb, but i had the same problem. I switched the ignitors around and the car runs just fine now.
Go figure!
