Engine Wiring Harness - How Hard is it to Remove?

I'm preparing my project 85 GS for paint. I have virtually everything removed except the engine wiring harness. I haven't convinced myself that I can pull everything through the hole in the firewall without damaging some wires or connectors. I'm also concerned about getting everything on the inside back in it's proper place...the wiring in that corner seems to be packed in pretty tight and it seems like it would be pretty hard to get everything back in place. Should I be concerned?

Thanks,
Rich

I did not have any problems with it when I did it. After you cut all the emissions wires out and cap em off there creates plenty of room for you to work with. I am only running like 5 wires to: the condensor on the motor, oil pressure gage, alternator, heat temp gage.

It looks alot better too!!

Good luck. post pics.

Thanks 2fast2rotar - I'm talking about the thick harness that enters the engine compartment on the driver's side...it has wires for the lights, ignition, A/C, sensors, all kinds of stuff. It sounds like you are talking about the one on the passenger's side...I already have that one out.

Thanks,
Rich

Shouldnt have been any cutting involved, trace the unused wires back to the harness and de-pin them

I did but I didnt want the harness showing b/c it does not fit through the boot that continues the wires through the firewall. All wires are capped so no short was created.

That's exactly what I did when I removed unwanted wires from the harness.

Snap plently of pics... and keep notes of what it is your taking pictures of. I didn't remove the drivers side harness fully when I painted my enginebay... just wrapped it up and hung it out of the way... but everything in the engine bay sure as **** went back in EXACTLY the way it all came out and the pictures helped BIG TIME. I didn't wanna tackle removing it, looked tooo involved.

This is great advice for anyone doing any kind of car work. I took tons of pictures when I restored my MGB and documented it on the web: http://64mgb.home.mchsi.com/ I'm not putting my pictures of the RX-7 on the web, but I do take tons of them. I have a computer in the garage, so it makes reassembly a lot easier. I use Picasa to organize my pictures...it's a free download from Google: http://picasa.google.com/

Speaking from experience it is a PITA to do that side but is very rewarding. Forget about doing it with the dash in there though. Everything is so mangled up in there its not even funny. I traced back every single wire that I did not need in the whole entire car and depined them one by one.

Easiest way to work through things is to first disconnect all the connectors in the engine bay area. Take all the tape off from both inside and outside. From there I just procedded to depinning which even wires I didn't need from the engine bay and pulled them.

You'll get a good laugh how the stock ground harness is done, it really is a joke I think. Also when I had everything out, I noticed that all the wires that still ran on the passenger side, were actually basically looped from all the way from the driver side behing the dash. So what I did was cut them to length and fed everything from the driver side. So you have ) wires coming from the passenger side. For me this was perfect because from the left side I wanted to feed my Megasquirt wiring harness from that and worked out perfect to have that only feeding from there.

I should have some pictures up on here in one of my threads about it. But thats all I have now basically, had a computer crash about a week ago and lost alot of my stuff.

Thanks for the input dj55b, but I think we're talking about different things. I want to pull the entire harness through the firewall so the paint guy doesn't have to work around it. I have almost everything out of the car, including the dash. All that's left are the pedals and the wiring mess in the upper left corner where the fuse box and cpu are. Just not sure if I want to tackle removing that mess, then trying to re-install it properly.

Ah sorry, Thought you wanted to simplify it. Nonetheless I've done that part too swapping harness. The biggest PITA in that is the harness stuck on top of the steering column. The way that mazda has that done is just a nightmare. They have one hook in the center of the thing that you can't get your fingers too and pulling either harness will get stuck on it. The only way I had mine removed from the one car is that because I removed alot of the wiring from those harnesses, I had only about 2/3rd of the wire so giving me a bit more room but even then still was basically the most time consuming part.
