Engine Swap 12a to 12a

Many quesions go into this and if it will work

1 I have a 79 body with a bad motor but good carb
2 I have an 82(not worth fixing interior or exterior) with a good motor but no carb(i have the carb but is in peices and i think a seloid is blown on the gas helper that gives 20% more gas milage)

I want the 79 body with the 82 12a in the 79 the only proble is i was thinking about taking the 79 carb and putting it on the 82 motor, will that work and still fit and connect with everything, also im taking the 82 trans with its motor, and i know the clutch shifter will be 2 inches back, will it still operate properly. well i hope that i have explained good enouph not being to vauge(i am not that great of a mechanic), thanks for the help if anyone can give it

well i cant help with everything but, i know that the carb can be switched with the manifold.(the 79-80 secondarys are larger and the manifold will accomidate the larger ports).in fact the local "race guy" suggest that if you keep the stock carb to get a 79-80 set up. if i am not mistaken the ports on the engine are the same; HOWEVER, i do not know if the rats nests are at all compadible so if you need emissions i would investigate it more. im not sure about the tranys but im sure that it can be fabricated. they should be very similar if not identical. hope this helps.

Just swap over the short block, use all the periferal stuff from your 79. Except the distributer, use the distributer from the 82, it is much better than the points type on the 79.

If I remember right, 79-80 had larger exhaust ports.

The rats nest is not going to be compadible between the two years due to the 79 using a thermal reactor, and the 82 using a catalytic convertor. the only way your going to get this to work is if You dump the emissions.

Thanks so much for the info, Michiana northern part of South Bend. If i were to race this car in the stock races at like autocross would it pass for stock? with out emissions? would it be wiser to just go out to the junkyard and find a 82 carb and use that? thanks again ill keep you all posted this sat is when im getting both cars in the garage and taking a huge look and start the project

Nope, the cats require air injection to keep from melting. As far as I know the lines just arent there. Just get a racing beat exhaust for your car. Its one of the best upgrades you can make without blowing out your budget.
