electric fan controller settup

alright i bought a Derale thermo fan controller, i need to know what temp to have it turn on at and shut off at, i was searching but never found the answer i needed, i am installing my temp gauge tonight and trying to get it working so i need to know this i dont wanna blow up my car


i rememeber some where saying have it turn on at 185? but i wanna make sure,

I used one on another project and just adjusted the fans to come on to keep the
temps at the right level. Trial and error. Every install is a bit different and the probes
are not that consistent I think.

yeah it looks like i'ma just have to watch my gauge and go till the fan turns on, then back it off abit, or something i dunno i am waiting for my radiator hoses to come in and i'm gunna get to start it back up

Do you know what temperature thermostat you have? I think that should be considered.

You should be running a 180* thermostat. I set my controller to keep the engine at 180* and monitor it with an aftermarket gauge.

I used this logic:

I don't want my fan to come on until the water is fully circulating through the cooling system. I also want the fan to turn off if the temp drops low enough.

Most thermostatic switches have a higher "on" temp than "off" temp. This hysteresis band keeps the fan from constantly cycling on and off.

So . . . if the thermostat is set at 180deg (which is the OEM rating), I would get a fan that comes on at 195 deg and turns off at 185 deg (or something in that range).
