Ebay sniping gone wrong

i just sniped an exaust and put my bid in for 175 with 1 min 20 secs left thinking i was safe. The current bid was like 130. i was winning with like 1 min left for 132$ then the other guy bid 3 more times and it went up to 165$. Take this as a lesson to wait to the absolute last second. Cost me 35$ for not waiting an extra 45 secs. Damn oh well lesson learned. Still a good deal i think tho it was a header to muffler complete exaust and mine is all leaky. Monza header id rather have RB but ill get a rb later then sell hte monza and regain some of my money.
Anybody else get srewed by not waiting long enough on ebay bidding?

i always snipe beacuse bidding early just drives the price higher and i never win. if i bid 175 on that exhaust a few days ago it probably would have sold over 200 to somebody else. i have it now for 165 so i guess the end justifys the means. if sniping is wrong ethically that is news to me. i think its good stratagy for a thrifty buyer.

Put me down for hating sniping. Put in the max you're willing to pay and see if you get it. I don't think there's necessarily anything ethically wrong with sniping, in fact eBay doesn't even discourage it. I just hate it.

What makes you think he didn't already put his max to 160? He was prob. on the couch sleep. I think you would have paid the same ether way dood. I can't say that I snipe, sometimes I just "wait 'till the last minute" to make up my mind.

i know he didnt have his max set at 160 because i checked to see if i was winning and i was. then after i clicked check status then it went up and then went up again twice more. if he had his max set at 160 my bid would have went to beat his and he wouldnt have any bids logged afterwerds. he was definatly watching it.

the thing about sniping on ebay is that a lot of guys do it with like 5~10 seconds left, through one of the various proxy bidders, this makes it hard to beat them. as a result, I bid up to 75% of what the item is worth (research first) on my final bid, and that kills most bid snipes as they generally target the 55~60 % range

I use a program that places my bid automatically 7 seconds before the end of the the auction. It synchronizes itself with eBay's clock. I just enter in my max bid at any time but it waits until then to place it.

I sit there and watch and wait, as I don't trust anybody with my paypal or credit card data if I don't have to. Stay up late? small price to pay to get the price I want.

I just enter in my max price that I'm willing to pay. It's a program on my computer, not on the internet. I set a max and won't cross it. If I win then great. If not, oh well. Alot of people don't enter in their max price since the try to watch it to the last second hoping what they see is the highest bid. Those are the people I usually beat. I don't buy on eBay that much anyways though.

My record is 3 seconds. Usually more around 5 or 7, though. Only on electronic stuff, though, those damn geeks are bastiges when it comes to eBay sniping.

I love it

I love auto sniping.
Why drive up the price with a bidding war.
Why stay up till 3am to bid?
Snipings fun even with out wine

I do it just because others do to beat my bid by $1 or less at the last second, and I can get a better price if I wait others out.
I really dont like doing it, though, but you have to if you want to get a unique item for what you want to pay.
Yahoo has a really cool thing to prevent sniping, they just add 5 minutes to the auction if somebody bids in the last few minutes, that ensures a real auction takes place. ie, where you actually DO enter your max bid in.
ebay should add this as an option to their auctions. it would really benefit everybody, IMO.

The reason I hate sniping is because most of the people doing it are resellers feeling out how much an item will go for. Then they repost the exact same product with a starting bid of the final bid or few bucks lower and watch the cash role in. It just makes me mad because it defeats the original purpose for the auction site.

I found out the hard way that if a seller snipes, then offers the product at the higher price later, to run! I bought slave and master clutch cylinders. Genuine Mazda Parts took about 3 weeks to ship despite having payed him with minutes of purchase. Also the brake fluid turns black despite 3 changings. I think the parts were rebuilt and not new. And to top it of, I recieved very hostile profanity laiden threats of legal action.

I kept all their e-mails and documentation in case genuine mazda parts ever goes with their threat of legal action. They said I'd be served with a summons as soon ash they found my address. Guess they are still looking!

Oh, and they tried to double bill me for the master cylinder too!!

I am a sniper, just dont see the point in driving up the price on parts, If I had unlimited budget I'd be in the 3rd Gen section....lol

I just use buy it now. The crap I buy on Ebay is still cheaper with buy it now, and I never win auctions cause Im a cheap skate and wont bid high enough, so I just look for cheap buy it now crap. To me, if Im still getting a lower price than retail or other, but a little higher than a potential ending auction, its worth the little extra cost to gurantee I get the item.

I have 2 snipers, the PC resident and the online type, both paid for. But 80% of the time I just bid straight (or "Buy Now" if the price is right). Usually I only look at items within 6-12 hours of the end. I try to figure out what I'm actually willing to pay and go from there.
