Josh,

As I understand it you're replacing the drive and alternator pulleys? Let me know how you like the underdrive pulleys, I've been seriously thinking of doing this mod. I think my water pump is probably slipping at high rpm.

Taking the fan off is easy, there are 4 little bolts that hold it on to a metal plate. This metal plate is attached to the water pump by the bolts that also secure the pulley.

I'm not sure what you mean by getting the belt around the water pump. Once the fan is out of the way, just loosen the belt using the bolt on the alternator and take it off.

I don't think you're taking off the water pump pulley, but if you do, be careful with these thin bolts. I was impatient and broke one of them off, and had to drill it out of the water pump (not a lot of fun).

The drive pulley is easy; hold the huge bolt in the middle with a big socket so that the pulley doesn't turn, and then loosen the 4 smaller bolts that hold it on. You should make sure to turn the pulley to TDC before you take it off, so you know which way the new one goes. Now is a good time to put some degree markings on your pulley if it doesn't have them - that way you can precisely adjust your timing.

As for the alternator pulley, I have no clue, I've never removed it.

Sorry if you already know all this stuff, I didn't before I did my electric install this spring!

Just a quick suggestion - don't be too upset if you can't get everything you want done in one day... I don't know how experienced you are, but if you are a beginner like me, complications always seem to arise. Often you discover you have to do or replace things along the way that you didn't count on. When I installed my fan there were at least 5 trips to Canadian Tire for hardware. It's better to do everything carefully than to rush, but I'm sure you know that.

Good Luck and have fun!

I had my dual alternator pulley put on at AutoZone. I don't have access to air tools. They did it in two minutes and no charge.

Thumbs up hehe

actually, i'm just installing the dual alternator pulley.
my problem is getting the second belt on the alt pulley around the water pump pulley. it looks as if the drive pulley and the water pump pulley are overlapping, like the drive pulley is directly in front of the water pulley. check it out and you will see what i mean. my whole thing is getting the second belt on there.
Josh

hehe, sorry for my obscureness!

I think I know your problem, if your alternator bolts up like mine does. On mine there is a spacer, on the pivot bolt, about 1/4" thick that is REQUIRED to line up the pulleys. You have to put the spacer behind the alternator when putting it back on the car. If you don't have this spacer, the alternator should flop around between the two braces.
Like I said, this is on my car, 85 GSL, and I'm not sure if it's the same as your 82.

Haha now I know what you mean... but if I understand right the water pump pulley is the one which is not lining up, not the alternator pulley.

Josh how are you planning on running the belts, both around the whole way, just doubled up? Maybe the new alternator pulley is different and only allows you to run the second belt around the waterpump and the alternator (and not to the drive pulley)? Sorry, I'm just pulling this idea entirely out of my ***.

I know I'm no help here, I'm just interested for when I do this mod.

I think we need a picture of someone's car running this setup!

You don't have to take the fan off. Just walk the belt around the blades.

The grooves line up. I didn't have a problem putting my pulley on.

Old pic of my car halfway through the emissions **** removal:

As far as the pulley all I did was use an impact to swap pulleys. I didn't even take the alternator off the car.

There is no way that the water pump pulley and the eccentric pulley don't line up. Both had belts going around them, but just going to two different components. The air pump belt should have gone around the water pump pulley and the eccentric pulley, and the alternator belt should have gone around the water pump pulley and the eccentric pulley. If you have taken off your air pump, which I had to when I installed my header, then you have the other groove for the front belt around the water pump, eccentric, and alt pulleys. If this isn't too clear, I'll try to take pics of mine and that might explain it better.

Be sure to get two alternator belts at the same store at the same time. I ran into problems when buying them at different stores. For some reason, different stores have dfferent belt specs. They are very similiar, but sometimes they differ slightly. Happy rotoring!!! No more belt squealling at 6,500 RPM's.
