Does your FB treat you well?
How many times has it broken down you?
How often do you need to replace miscellaneous parts?
How does your FB respond to long commutes and heavy traffic?
How is it interms of reliability (assuming it's stock and "well taken care of")?
Thanks

My car has never "broken down" when it was out of commision it was due to me not doing what i can to keep it going. **** like not cleaning the battery poles enough or flooding the engine.

Replacing parts - I haven't had to replace many broken parts. I'm not one to replace parts just for the sake of replacing them.
Long commutes and heavy traffic? For me, that's basically everyday - 100 miles of it five days each week. Yet, I still don't think I drive it that much.
Reliability? Well, after putting a bit of money into the car, I'd say that it's pretty darn reliable.
Are you thinking of getting one? It's a nice and fast little car and if well taken care of, it should bring you years of pleasure. Good luck.

Damn, it did start!
I have been on the same engine (but different cars) since 1997. Since then I have lost one oil sender unit and 3 clutches (one blew apart when I was playing aroung with a FC on my new clutch's maiden voyage) .
Hands down I have had more fuel related problems than any. I have had carb work done 4 times. some simple, some more complex.
Other than that the engine has been very good to me. I never get bored while driving. we have very straight roads and I have NO stereo.
Long drives are great for the car has fun to spare. I have read reviews (professional and ameature) and most people say the first gen is funner than a second gen. I have owned both ( a 87 TII) and the FB . While the First gen was slower, it left a bigger grin on my face when I was done.
The FB is such a simple machine and has so much soul that it brings out the raw passion of driving. It's like the feeling you got when you took the family car out for the first time when you got your new drivers licence, But in a way cooler car!
Having said this, the car can be a money pit as there is always something you can do to improve it to better suit your tastes and it can be an emotional drain. Plus make sure you get a significant other who apreciates your passion. You will become one with your car as the RX-7 will become part of you.

As for reliability? At one point I would travel almost 300km's A DAY. This was for a period lasting a little over a month, 5 days a week. Every morning, she would start up and she would take a half a tank to get there and a half to get back! Oil consumption was up there, but that comes with the territory, I wasnt driving very slow. I did oil changes every couple of weeks to compensate for all the milage. Even through the toughest traffic, no matter how long I was stuck (took me 3 hours in the morning) the temp gauge never moved from it's 1/4 position.
Id say thats pretty reliable. Although, I wouldnt want to do that over a long period of time, I put more km's on my car in two weeks this summer than i did all of last summer.

Well, my FB broke down all the time, bad starter, bad fuel pump, clutch slave cylinder, blown rad, split oil cooler line, etc, etc, etc. My SA, OTOH, has yet to leave me stranded, although I had an ignition problem this winter that was remedied by swapping the dizzy over to the later model electronic unit.
How often do you need to replace miscellaneous parts?
Well, I view my SA as a 'fixer-upper,' so I have done some work to it. I've swapped the dizzy over to electronic, replaced the rear shocks, rebuilt my clutch and brake hydraulic systems, put new pads on the front, etc etc etc. So I guess I replace quite a few things, but for a car that's older than I am, my SA does quite well.
How does your FB respond to long commutes and heavy traffic?
I wouldn't want to drive much anything else. The SA is light and nimble, able to move through traffic better than most of the gargantuan SUVs and trucks out here in Redneck country. I haven't had the SA out for a long trip yet, but my FB did great...when it wasn't breaking down.
How is it interms of reliability (assuming it's stock and "well taken care of")?
Thanks

I bought The 83 new and have been the only driver and it's been ultra-reliable. Never broke down on the road. Last year I did some work on the cooling system brakes shocks and clutch with 110k on the odo.
The 85 I bought last year has been good. It's getting a new clutch this week.

Mine has been great. Little problems end up being quite easy to fix.
Maybe a month after owning it, I had to do an emergency drive from Fargo to Minneapolis (4 hours). I towed it there on a trailer, so I didn't know if the car would even make the trip...
2 hours into it, my exhaust explodes on the highway at 80 mph. I thought I blew the engine and would be stuck in the middle of nowhere.
I pulled over, yanked off what was left of the exhaust, and now only had the stock exhaust manifold. It fired right up (allbeit 10x as loud) and drove the rest of the 4 hour drive back home just fine.
I have the usual small oil leak near the "12a" lettering on the block......but it doesn't go through much oil at all. (quite impressed with my constant high rev driving).
I'm very impressed with how simple these cars are to fix, and operate. Aside of buying a truck and a trailer to pull these around, I dont think I'll ever buy a different kind of car.
I got rotary fever.

My '81 never had a single problem in five years. I replaced brakes and bearings and plugs and things like that on a regular basis, but the car never let me down, not once, and I drove it hard.
