Lightbulb Does anyone make coil on plug for 1st gen?

Paul Yaw said he would like to but that did not materialize. Anyone else ever take on that project? Thought it would go hand in hand with direct fire ignition.

And we'd have 2 spare ignition wires to boot!

http://www.magnecor.com/

I bought the 10mm ones. Work great and they can make custom applications for you which is what I did. just give them the length and style of boots your looking for.

I thought about this a while back... seems like it would be a good match with a direct fire system. I called the local dealership and they quoted me about 75 per rx8 coil

Won't the vibration from the motor on the coils cause a problem?

Coil on plug is used in many cars, so no, it won't cause a problem if set up right.

75 is a lot for one wire if thats what your saying. I paid less than that for the whole wire set from magnecor.

Probably for control of the timing of each individual plug and less electrical resistance.

Just for clarification, the RX-8 does not have a true coil on plug system. It has a coil per plug system. When Yaw referred to doing this, he wanted to physically mount a coil on each plug with no plug wires. The RX-8 does not do this. It is just like the 3rd gens in that it has it's coils mounted up on top of the engine with short plug wires.

Seems unnecessary. It's not like we're burning alcohol and running up to 14k.

Jeff, I finally got the MS working really good. Pulls really nicely and is definitely faster than it ever was with the stock ecu. I don't know why people say it is hard to tune a standalone without a dyno. I still need some more tweaking with the cold idle and a couple of other small things but it is great overall.

That's totally cool! The latest release (022i6) has some new cold idle stuff you should check out. You're going to have to make a new msq from scratch though because the 022 series of code is slightly different and an msq from any of the earlier 021 series is incompatible. Just take a couple screen shots of your tables and other settings, or write them down. I can build a new msq from scratch in like 2 minutes. The real time saver is from having converted my custom VE and spark tables into 'MS units' (0-255) and simply copy them over the defaults in the asm itself and compile. It's really not a problem since I must compile every new code to include my Mazda thermistor inc files anyway. It's about as involved as changing the warning and danger color indicators of the RPM guage in the ini file (I think yellow at 6500 and red at 7k will be ok on my stock ports).

If you're interested in learning more, I can share the details through a PM. This thread is about COP, so to try to bring it back on topic, what ignition are you running on your engine? I did some side by side comparisons of a J-109 and Diamond coil vs a 2nd gen leading ignitor and coil assembly. I triggered each with my MS from one of the LEDs. The differences were shocking (sorry about the pun).
