no, thru the rx7's complicated exhaust setup you'll still have the main cat and muffler. the pre cat wont make a big sound difference. what do you consider "too loud"?

If you got the Racing Bleat header specific for the SA models, it will bolt up to the stock heat exchanger, which will help quiet it down. The mini-presilencer they sell that replaces the stock heat exchanger isn't as quiet as I would like. If you run a header directly to the stock muffler, it will be quite loud.

Also, if your car likes to pop quite a bit(like mine) the stock muffler will not put up with it for long. Without anything before the muffler absorbing some of that force caused by the pops, the muffler will probably explode eventually. I was running the stock mainfold, gutted cats and stock muffler. After a while, the stock muffler couldn't take it, and just plain exploded when it popped one time. It was pretty bad, the side of the muffler completely split, that whole side of the muffler had about an 8'' tall hole that opened up when the side split. It also exploded out and hit the heat shield, and I had to take a hammer to the heat shield to bend it off my tire so I could continue driving until I got a new muffler.

So, the stock heat exchanger provides a muffling effect...is it more or less than the RB pre-silencer? In other words, which is louder?

The mini-presilencer is a bit louder than the stock heat exchanger, but a full-length presilencer is as quiet or quieter, and adds a more pleasant, lower tone. The mini-presilencer is a bit raspy when you get on the gas.

Backfiring (after the thermal reactor is replaced with a header) indicates a problem and is not normal. I wouldn't worry too much about blowing out your muffler.
Most thermal reactor equipped rotaries normally STOP backfiring after a header is installed.
