DLIDFIS questions
So I'm a little confused about it. I have been looking to setup a dlidfis system for a while and now I have some free time to do it, but street reading some of the threads around here I've gotten confused on a few things. First, since it's direct fire I won't need a working distributor or cap, right? I have some old ones laying around I figure I would use because I have no idea if they work or not.Secondly, GM hei ignitors? where do you buy them? I've been looking for them online but they apparently don't exist. Third, do you need just the two coils or three? Different threads say different things.
I've yet to find a good write-up with pics that aren't dead so I've been trying to piece it all together from different threads. Maybe someone can point me in the direction of one?

Try the write up in my signature. That uses TFI coils and GM HEI ignitors. You use any coil you
like and the HEIs are cheap at the junkyard or autozone. If your only doing leading you need
2 coils preferably but you could use a 2G coil as well. You need a dizzy if you run trailing
otherwise just use the cap to cover the dizzy.

I have the stuff to do TFIDFIS, it's on the list in the next 2 weeks, with a bunch of other stuff. Got Jegs TFI coils on sale, HEI's I think on ebay. I'll post when it's done. I'm a damn good cook, this wiring stuff intimidates me. The worst that can happen is I go back to stock. You can do this.

Is there anything lost by not running the trailing plugs?
When you say cap off the distributor, do you mean that I'll be able to remove the entire distributor and put a cover over the empty hole? That would be a clean look.
I looked into this a few times but my eyes keep getting glassie eye'd. Jeff20b's write up is great, but there is a wiring diagram link on his page that's dead. I get nervous when thinking about messing with the ignition.
I used to make my own circuit boards when I was 11 yrs old. I can't imagine that this should be all that hard to do. I want to do this. Damm, I'm going to do this.

trailing and update my thread. Ideally this would involve a dyno session to show
how much is/is not lost.
You still need the dizzy as your using the weak reluctor signal to trigger the
ignitors. You just don't run the leading plugs through the dizzy, they go direct
from the coils to the plugs. Thats why its a wasted spark as each coil actually fires
multiple times during combustion.
You can do it, its not hard to do.

Is there any real difference between dlidfis and tfidfis? The whole damn abject confuses me so much. I hate electrical but dammit I want it done lol. I was told you can use your stock igniters with a dlidfis setup, and that all you need to do is run 2 plug wires from the 2 leading coils to the spark plugs on top, and then run 1 plug wire from the center plug of the distributor cap to a third trailing coil, and then 2 plug wires from 2 more plugs on the cap to the 2 lower speak plugs, and that's it......right? But what plugs on the cap do I connect the wires that go to the spark plugs to? Or am I dead wrong right now?

DLIDFIS and TFIDLFIS both achieve the same thing, but use different components to do so. I went the TFI route and the most expensive thing I had to buy were the plug wires. For me the point in switching over was to eliminate the high dollar components our stock ignition has with cheaper, easier to find components. The stock ignition module is expensive if you need to replace it, and from what I heard, happens frequently. Where a GM HEI is plentiful and buying a new one from the parts store is between $20-35.
To sum up the TFI swap: what I did was get a dead factory ignition module and open it up, remove the guts and solder some jumper wires across(pics can be found easy), I used the factory plug for the module, cut the wires and ran my own over to the strut tower where my 2 HEI modules are at. I picked up 2 7 pin HEI Modules from the salvage yard, they fit in your pocket great, and picked up some TFI coils out of some old Lincoln Towncars. Mounted everything off the strut tower with 2 brackets I had to make. I used the wiring diagrams I found in t_g_farrell's thread to wire everything up(I had to switch the ignition module wires, but easy fix for me after). Your 2 new coils will go to your LEADING plugs(Lower). I kept the stock trailing setup for now, which still has 1 coil running to the distributor and 2 wires off the distributor to the 2 TOP plugs.

I may be able to help, try my how-to... i had lots of issues with it at first, but once i got it all figured out, it seemed too simple...
