DLIDFIS durability

Hey everyone, I have a 1984 gsl se and i am planning on doing the DLIDFIS ignition setup. I already have 2 HEI's because i had to replace my J-109's. How has the setup lasted for you guys over the years? Have you noticed any negative effects?

Thanks,

Nathan

The weakest link is the MAZDA ignitors. Since your using HEIs your good to go.
They are easy and cheap to source if they go bad. Coil choice is up to you.

I've gone with two Ford TFI coils, replacing my 2G coil and I'm getting a much
better spark. Your mileage may vary. At least now I can get the parts very easily
anywhere in the US of A.

I ended up doing the G2 DLIDFIS upgrade. I'm using two HEI's and one stock coil as well as one second gen coil. The car runs well, dunno if its faster or not. Before going to direct fire using 1 J109 and 1 HEI the car would feel like it pulled away around 2500 RPM. It was weird cause now, after the upgrade it no longer does it. Would getting some better coil's be worth the amount paid? The second gen coil was free.

Thanks,
Nathan

Sounds like you may have chosen 2GCDFIS? Please explain how you hooked it up so we can be sure. Let's keep our nomenclature correct for future search accuracy, ok?

I compared 2GCDFIS and DLIDFIS with stock ignition on PercentSevenC's car. My opinion is 2GCDFIS wasn't very good; kinda sketchy all around, like a hack. It was a very small improvement over stock and burned out the stock J-109 in a month or two (ask Percent). DLIDFIS actually made a noticeable difference in the way it ran, for the better. I believe if we had gone with an HEI with 2GCDFIS, it might not have burned out so soon (or at all?)because they can handle more amps (J-109 handles about 3 amps, HEI about 5 or 6 amps depending on the brand).

As for whether the performance would have improved with an HEI, I don't know. That's for others to figure out. Not really interested anymore as both Percent and I are very happy with the way DLIDFIS improved his car's driveability and perhaps more importantly RELIABILITY. No need to dick around with it now. Works perfectly. No symptoms of running hot or whatever. As I said earlier, I'm at 9 years and counting on my setup. Oh and this is with stock J-109 ignitors and stock Diamond coils on BUR7EQ leading FC plugs and various forms of boost (mine is a Camdem and Percent's is a turbo). And yes my 2nd gen leading coil that I experimented with was also free.

I have to second what Jeff says. I ran the 2GDFIS using my stock J105 ignitors
for a couple of years and then over the winter the leading ignitir or ignition circuit
it plugged into fried. I suspected that the 2G coil was the cause. I then
implemented the ignition (see link in my sig) and its very strong now and easily
serviced should anything burn out in the future.

I switched to DLIDFIS when i got another stock coil. I couldn't find the writeup on how to do it so i struggled for a bit. But it works now. 2 HEI as lead and a J 109 as trail. It runs well but the tach only sometimes doesn't want to keep a steady idle. Usually its good, i have no idea what could cause this. I am getting another HEI for trail soon. What can i do to fix the tach issue?

Swap to an HEI first. Then suspect the wiring. Then maybe the tach itself.
