distributor vaccuum advance/rats nest
the leading and trailing vaccuum advance hoses go from from the distributor to the 2 rats nest connector things and then to the carb spacer. ok first what do the rats nest connectors do - why dont the hoses go straight to the carb spacer? also (this is more of a general car question, but im still learning so please bear with me ) what happens when the hoses get to the carb spacer? i was messing with it and it looks like there are "tunnels" that go through the carb spacer and have an opening at the throttle bores. i guess what im trying to ask is how does the vaccuum advance work?

Wow.. you're getting pretty good at asking some pretty specific questions to get understanding about this nest.
I don't really understand it myself in a "what do all the parts do individually to make the whole thing work together" sense... but I'll definitely be archiving these :P
Next time though, please throw all your questions about related topics into one thread, so that it doesn't clutter up page 1 of the posts.

Airflow is my life
They dont go direct cause under certain conditions Mazda had it set up to cut vac advance. It's for emissions and to reduce backfiring/flames in the exhaust AFAIK.
Look at how its tested in the shop manual. So much useless crap they had to put on these cars LOL.
