Distributor Cap Dilema

I tried to find info on how this cap and rotor work. My car apparently isn't set up as Haynes would lead me to believe. As I am sure all of you have one of these books on page 24 there is a diagram of the roato location and distributor rotation. Are the black dots the lead and the white dots the trailing? My dilema stems from rotor 1 being correct in the book and rotor 2 being opposite. I pulled one plug off the cap at a time, so I know it is as it was when I got the car. When looking at the cap, it makes sense the way it is written with the L1, T1, L2, T2, but that is not what Haynes says.

Thanks for the clarification.

Did you check the back of the book under "revisions on later models"

They may have changed it from the stock 79 that they base the diagrams off of.

Set your car at top dead center. Align the dizzy marks at the bottom, should be a dimple on the gear and a slot on the shaft near the gear. Make sure those are lined up and drop it in the engine. L1 and T1 go on the front rotor housing bottom plug and top plug respectively. L2 and T2 go on the rear rotor housing (closest to the firewall) bottom and top, respectively. The leading coil is the rear most coil, attach that to the L on the dizzy cap, and the trailing coil is the coil closest to the headlamp, that goes on the T of the dizzy cap.

Is that what you are asking about?

Does it make a difference which coil goes to the L or T on the cap? I thought both the coils were the same, but I oculd be wrong.

yes it does. the ignitors fire leading or trailing, and then the cap sends the leading or trailing to #1 or #2 rotor.

both of my cars have the Leading coil in the rear, however one is a 79 with points, and the others a race car, and could have been swapped.

you can tell by the boots on the coil wires, i think trailing is blue, and leading is black

Mazda had the trailing in front because that allows the high tension wires to go over to the cap without crossing over each each. Notice that they're parallel? It prevents 'cross talk'.

Thanks jeezus. I got the new plugs and wires today. My goodness, I had the B8EGV plugs. The car started up great on the first try, then died, but so did my tachometer. I'm realizing this is the darkside effing with me.
