direct fire setup

I caught a great deal on a second gen ignitor and coil pack off of a T2 . The problem is that it turned out to be a trailing coil. Is there any reason why I cannt use it in the direct fire setup.

Yes you did but this situation is not present in your equation what I'm asking is CAN a trailing coil pack be used . Or better still what the hell is the difference between the the two coil packs.

There is a way to run a 2nd gen trailing coil, but I don't know the specifics. Maybe I oughta learn because I have one too.

sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, but I am wondering if it is possible to make a direct fire setup using nothing but first gen ignitors and coils. I have some extra stuff laying around and would like to use it for a direct fire setup.

Would anyone be interested in some bolt in kits ?
using all 2nd gen parts ?
pretty much plug and play ?

I can whip a couple up if the demand is high enough

Lotus, look for Jeff20b's DLIDFIS writeup. Hell just search for DLIDFIS, and look in the FAQ and Archive. There's lots about it, and it's one of the easier searches to wade through.

Lotus00, you just described the perfect reason to use DLIDFIS. Click my www button.

That looks like it will work for people. Could you also draw a couple more with the FC leading coil hooked to an ignitor (with ballast resistor) and an MSD (without resisitor)? You could also do one or more with the FC trailing coil on trailing if you wanted to.

Or you could do something different and run two Accel brains, two Accel coils and two Jacobs High Energy coils...

Please email me about the kit, that is my next upgrade. I was also wondering about a dizzy-less setup as in the later models have. Mind you I run a 12A with points still.

One simple question, why is SLIDFIS only temperary to DLIDFIS? Wouldn't it work just as well?

SLIDFIS should only be used for a short period of time because although it won't hurt anything, it does reduce the voltage to each coil whereas DLIDFIS does not. Remember parallel and series wiring differences from school? SLIDFIS hooks both coils to one ignitor in series thus reducing voltage by half. High RPM power won't be very good. It's ok for a short term solution, but should be upgraded with one more ignitor as soon as possible.

On a similar topic, hooking an MSD to two coils in parallel will reduce the amperage by half. The CD output of the MSD is already high voltage, low amperage, so hooking it to two coils reduces available amps by half. The best solution is to use an FC leading coil because it has a single primary coil inside. Several people have done it this way and have had great success. I too will hook my MSD 6AL to an FC leading coil.
