Unhappy destroying igniters

Ok so it all started about 20min after I washed my car I was meeting my friend to take some photos and all of a sudden my car wouldn't idle or run properly. At all at first I thought it was a vacuum leak or something of that sort after further diag and lots of money spent on parts that didn't fix my problem I have come to the conclusion that my car is eating leading Igniters, from stock igniters to an MSD 6al box to GM igniters setup properly with DLIDFIS it has destroyed all of them all while running like crap. I have tried to time it multiple times and I believe it is set properly. I hope the attached video will allow someone to help me with the problem I am lost right now and would like to get this car back to a good running condition.

Currently i have the car wired up where I’m using a single GM igniter to replace only the leading igniter wired with a relay and everything to make it a proper conversion

Are you still burning up igniter? I have a stock 1985 if you need to compare wiring.

that car sounds like it is running on the trailing plugs. are you using an OEM coil for the leading? maybe the car is killing the coil?

That SS coil is a monster. I bet it's burning the igniters up.

Also, depending on the MSD box and how it is setup, it can cause issues.

Photo, nice looking car, looks like a custom paint job. A chain holding up an after market muffler?

Smarter people than me use 2 ignitors and 2 coils for leading. I had all kinds of trouble with the direct fire. It was a bad leading plug, and bad electrical connections.

A picture of your dfis would help

that would make sense that the SS coil is destroying stuff as for the msd box this problem started occurring when I had a completely stock ignition system and everything after that was me trying to fix it by changing my ignition system which was a rookie mistake

thank you I bought it like this from what I understand it’s an old RB muffler and the chain has always worked so I never saw a reason to change it lol and yeah I could use to check that and probably end up going to a proper setup here is a picture of my current dfis setup it’s a bit messy but it did work

Is that ignitor attached to the distributor gutted, as in wires in and out are directly connected?

The GM Ignitor has two protrusions on the backside so it isn't in contact with the metal mounting plate. And yours look like there is a space between the ignitor and mounting plate. So there is no heat transfer. And if that is aluminum and an oxide forms, the oxide will be a great insulator. I had to grind my aluminum bracket down to the fresh metal.

And make sure you are using the thermal transfer paste that comes with the ignitor, white goo you put in between the ignitor and heat sink.

yes the ignitor is gutted and set up properly. And the GM ignitor is setup good that space you are seeing is from the thermal paste I put in between the igniter and the piece of aluminum

Good grounds are absolutely essential. I melted two brand new MSD Blaster 2 oil filled coils after I rewired my race car. I kept replacing parts and plugs while trying to diagnose the problem. Finally, I ripped everything out and started over. I bought several big grounding straps and I installed a grounding strap to each of the housings, to the starter, the alternator, distributor, and several points on the chassis. Never had a problem since.
